EPISODE 152 – IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS AND CHRISTINE
The podcast on Haunted Hill will contain spoilers and swearing.
I am the devil, and I am here to do the devil's work.
I saw this icon.
Be one of us.
I didn't tell you my name.
I didn't tell you my name.
I didn't tell you my name.
They're all apart, don't.
It is time to keep your appointment.
Hello and welcome to the podcast on Haunted Hill episode one hundred and fifty two. My name is Gav.
Welcome everybody, hope everyone's safe in the world, everyone's happy, been watching lots of movies, horror ones, maybe non-horror ones, romantic ones, maybe sexy ones, maybe dirty ones.
Wow, we are off to a flying start. As always thirty seconds with I with you mentioning some kind of porn. I love it. It's something you can rely on, but we are the podcast on Haunted Hill and we do generally cover horror films, not we've never done a porno yet.
I don't know. I would I happily do uh erotic I. I've s I've said to the guys about making a erotic horror movie. I have said about it because, you know, you could do.
Yeah.
Uh Emmanuel and the cannibals.
Well that's that's what I was about to say actually, when it comes down to it, my humour's f cheap as fuck, really is. It's ch it's happy shopper for the last U_K_ listeners. It's my humour is happy shopper. It's basically just anything which is related to holes, uh s stiffings, you know.
Get stores for a U_S_ listeners. Um very cheap and cheerful. You know? No, happy shopper isn't no, but um this is our fourth and won't be our last John Carpenter special.
Oh m one day walking home from school with a little happy shopper would go by and uh I went in and I shoplifted a liter bottle of cola, right. I don't know how I was a kid, a school kid on the way home. I was thirsty and said oh fuck it. Dragged the whole lot, that night puked my guts up. Message uh message sent.
Mm-hmm.
in my home town and I w she let me wander off to go and look at the comics as she did and I was probably about seven or eight and I thought oh, the pick and mix section. I might steal a couple of sweets. What sweets do you think I stole? I stole blackjacks, the ones that turn your tongues black, don't I? What an idiot. My mum saw straight away that I had a black tongue. She made me go over to the manager and apologise to the manager of the store and I never stole sweets from that shop again.
You stole 'em from another shop.
And you felt bad.
And I used to go in there to buy my stickers, Garbage Pelt Kids or or He-Man, Panini stickers, whichever it was, and I would always say to her, I've got three packets, but I would position them so that there was another couple of packets hidden behind one of them, so I'd really I'd be buying like three packets, but I'd be walking out of there with like five or six packets of stickers and, it was very naughty of me, but we don't condone that that's naughty. If anyone's out there shoplifting, don't do it.
the poor lady, so she's tallying up the money that she should be making. Oh no, we haven't. They've been stolen by that We're. gonna we can't afford a funeral for John, 'cause we did sell the He-Man stickers. Dan, you can't No. no fucking funeral for John, Dan, you can't.
That's me. Episode a hundred and fifty two though, as I say, is our fourth John Carpenter special. So welcome to an the world of John Carpenter. For those of you who haven't been listening to us for ten years, um he's our favourite horror movie director, as he is a lot of people um and we'll get into he's fucking brilliant Well. we're gonna get into that. Um we've covered a hell of a lot of his movies in in director specials uh or just or you know
randomly. Um we've probably covered about seven or eight of his films now. Um and we're gonna be discussing we what we do with John when we get to his episode specials is we pick one each uh for us to review. So I have selected the red murder mobile Stephen King penned Christine from nineteen eighty three for us to dissect and get under the hood of as if you will.
Mm. And Gavin you have selected the Sam Neill uh slightly meta in the mouth of madness from nineteen ninety four. Uh where John Carpenter goes H_P_ Lovecraft. Yeah it's it's interesting we've got John Carpenter meets Stephen King in this episode and John Carpenter meets H_P_ Lovecraft. And I do feel yeah. Yeah.
connection obviously it's based on Stephen King. And I do feel that um he is a director that you wouldn't expect to be able to absorb and sort of demonstrate an a write another writer's style but because John Carpenter has a very solid John Carpenter style but I do feel and we'll get into it that Christine he does show it's a Stephen King write you know written film and I do feel he's demonstrating some good
be love-cramped elements in both the madness. So we'll get into that further, you know basically, stemming on love for Mister Carpenter. So that's what we're doing in this episode. We've also got word of the strange Mister. Murray is currently in an Uber on his way here um which is fantastic. Uh. Well he's a busy boy. Well he's a busy boy 'cause coming out this week is Ghostbusters Frozen M_
I know. I'm gonna hopefully try and go see it in the local cinema in my town now which is I've been there to cinema in my town since I watched Octopussy with my dad when I was a nipper. Octopussy. Mm-hmm. Um uh yeah, and uh so I hope you're gonna watch that this weekend. Looking forward to the new Ghostbusters movie.
I'm on holiday with m my in-laws uh so I won't be watching it opening week, but I will definitely be getting into the cinema to watch that when I get back. I'm only locally, you know, on the coast. Nothing, I'm not going abroad. Um but I'm really yeah, I'm hyped for it. I watched an interview with Ernie Hudson and Bill Murray on um one of the the American talk shows, can't remember who it was now, and they both were really came across really well. Bill Murray particularly was really really funny.
Ernie Hudson told a funny story about how he he once met a girl uh who said, oh my God, I'm getting married in thirty minutes, would you give us away? And he was like, d what? And she was like, I met you before and she had a tattoo of his signature on her ankle. Apparently he signed it years ago and he didn't remember doing it. And as he was telling this story, Bill Murray grabs a panel of the host's desks and gets Ernie Hudson to sign Bill Murray's ankle as well. It's very funny Then. they pretended to play with proton packs and Bill Murray actually said
that I'm a bit of a cynical guy, but I've seen it, and I'm gonna say that you guys are gonna be blown away by this one. Um I'm really actually pleased to be a part of it. And I thought fucking hell with Bill Murray saying that. I mean yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I really like the last one, so I'm really looking forward to this one. I did like the last one, yeah.
I don't even know when that last one came out I thought that one was just gonna be it. I didn't think it was gonna be like a new f obviously like in Ghostbusters it's like uh uh it's a very worldwide cultural thing, it's uh it's quite a thing which should play off for years the music, everything it's one of those gods films, uh everything came together in a very clever way and it all just worked and it's stuck and people still uh it will always linger on. But I did think the li that one came out not long ago uh, you know, a couple of years ago. I
thought that maybe that's just kind of like you're bookend, maybe that's it but, but I don't mind I'm, happy if if th the one it looks like wh how it does on trailers is that I'm happy to go back to the world of Ghostbusters it happy.
on a a small tangent um uh while we're talking about Ghostbusters, my daughter, who is gonna be three in a couple of months, made her first joke the other day uh day related to this. So when my children were born, the lovely Kate Pollock, who we know through podcasting and also she's a good friend of mine, she sent some books to my children, one of which was a children's version of Ghostbusters. Um and we we do read that one, it's one of the books that's on rotation. And in the kitchen the other day Edith pointed to the toaster, said what's
And my wife said, that's a toaster, it makes the toast. You put the bread in, gets hot, toast. And she went all quiet and then went ha, toast-busters. So it's a joke but not a joke. She made a pun. I liked it, I was proud of her, just thought I'd mentioned that. Look at it. Now, Gav, that's what's coming up, that's what we're excited to watch, but what have you been feasting your goggle eyes on all over the screen? I've
been feasting your goggle eyes on all over the screen.
Um well, I tell you what, I watched A Week in Rosara, which is worth mentioning, it is Robo-Doc the, documentary on Robo-Doc I've. got a f funny enough, I've got something to talk about related to that, but you could please continue.
Uh it's a four-part documentary, uh totally in about five hours, um going through everything, sound effects, the the the stop-motion, the explosions. Again, almost getting shut down by the police because of just how insane they're going with the explosions. You know, stuff like that. But thoroughly if you're a Robo-Coc fan, I kinda think you would be a Robo-Coc fan, but it is quite long, so it is getting into the mechanics, so to speak.
Of Robo-Coc, um it's a very good watch and worth watching, it's got everyone in it as well. Um yeah, as you can imagine, it's a really good wat watch going into all of the detail of it. Oh, and it they really get into the breaking up the uh uh the man, the spludged man at the end. They really get into a hole doing that and the make-up and it looks so good when they put on all of it, it's just oh my God, you know. And the head explosion, they exp explain all the effects and stuff. But really worth a watch.
If you if you wanna just go fuck it, I'm gonna fucking get balls deep into Robo-Coc.
Um I've said this in the past, I'm a huge fan of documentaries ba especially based on films I love Uh. I really loved that really long nine hour Friday the thirteenth documentary, and I do love the bit. So yes, I'm gonna be watching Robo-Doc at some point. Talking of documentaries.
Um so it it's free, you c five hours of Robo-Coc documentary.
Um sh sorry, which is on prime if you're paying for it. Um I c finally finished and started uh and finished season two of cursed films. Um season one cover, the crow, poltergeist, etcetera Yeah. season two w wasn't as good. They did Wizard of Oz, which was very interesting.
Yeah, I wasn't really interested in some of the season two.
They did Serpent in the Rainbow, but then there was a couple of movies that weren't as interesting. S so it's season one definitely worth a watch. Season two is alright. I just don't do Shadow. It's a shame you first when Shadow first came out there and promoted it uh 'cause I used to have a T_shirt, they promoted it at fight fest, and it was like what is this Oh? that's just cool as fuck That. was a long time ago. Um and I thought that's so cool, like a dedicated horror channel and stuff. But just the U_K_ content, it is so lackluster, you can you know.
of Shudder, I also on Shudder finished season three and four of Creepshow. Um and they're they're very good. I've all four seasons have been fantastic. Because there's two episodes two s f stories per episode, you sometimes get one which is a bit weak, but they're only twenty minutes each. It's fun and I highly recommend if you've got Shudder um just go ahead and watch Creepshow series, you'll power through it. And the fifth season is coming out in October apparently. That's littered with horror movie references, people from old
horror films, stuff related to Creepshow, um George Romero, he's e even in an episode without spoiling it. Uh the most recent episode I watched, he was in, and you'll understand how when when you watch it. Good fun. But the other thing like the other link I've got to the Robo-Doc is I watched a movie the other day, so to oh there is yeah, Robo-COP, it's called, COP. Yep Half. man, half machine, all lover.
I didn't expect you to know the tagline as well but, Oh okay. I've worked at half-man half-machine all quite. Oh. Do it do it with the voice. It's actually coming with me. Yeah. I was gonna say compliance, but that's a completely different film
compliance. Um yeah, talking of Robocop as well, I watched a relatively new film, it's two years old now, it's on Netflix in the U_K_ and it's basically if you took Robocop and it had a baby with the universal soldier, yeah, so far you're thinking oh yeah Dan, yeah. And then and then Vin Diesel stars in it. Yeah. Yeah. It's called Bloodshot. And it's and it's
and it's from twenty twenty uh it's based on a as a comic book series uh a a limited run that not many people have heard of. It's uh it's like it's it really it was like literally never been like oh nice a Vin Dieselfelter, I don't care.
You know what you're getting with him um but I watched it because you know it's basically about a a soldier that's killed and brought back from the dead, like universal soldier, but also like RoboCop. He doesn't wanna do it and they force him to go on these missions and he's trying to remember who he is. But the other thing is is well he's made his blood has been replaced with um tiny little robots so that if he his face gets blown off by shotgun it can sort of instantly r repair itself with this little cloud of robots. It's pretty cool effect.
it basically was like a such an average film though. It's like I gave it six out of ten, just above average. It's lo if it would've been if it had been made in the nineties, everyone would have loved it. It was like the love the director must love nineties action films 'cause it was it felt like a nineties action film. But um it was alright. And I tell you the baddie, wasn't it? It was the brother from uh Dead Man Shoes again. He's turned up again in this as the bad guy.
It was alright. I watched I got up this morning fairly early actually and I was like fuck it I'm gonna watch a movie actually, I had a day off today um kind of so I watched a movie I I bought it actually it was on my list for a little while uh and they're renting it for ninety nine people buy it for one ninety nine I thought oh fuck I'll just buy it 'cause I'm all raw chicken called Outpost. Uh about a lady in a fire tower. That's the Outpost.
Oh yeah okay, Uh. the outpost, this is like just an a a a tower where you look for fires uh in the mid of the woods, and a lady's been um uh I didn't mind her actually, uh it's a couple of years old, um I've been listening to a podcast where it's about a a far a fire range upper tower, and I've always liked that concept, it's nice isolations, included, in the woods so, she can happen.
Okay, yeah um so this one's a lady she's been um she's just been she's put in hospital by a boyfriend or whatever um at the beginning of it it's like um the sounds of that uh t real hard-core domestic abuse and um she's traumatised so like you know when she talks to men all of a sudden she it cuts to her being strangled by that man or she thinks they're looking at her 'cause they're gonna wanna rape her or whatever so she's really traumatised and so she's going for three months out in the middle of nowhere to
a f uh a full um volunteering it's not a, you know, paid position. I don't know how she's gonna do it for three months though. How do you survive volunteering for three months Anyway? And she does that and then things happen. It's alright, wasn't too bad actually. Perfect well acted really, nice beautiful woodland shots, you know, as you can imagine. Um I'm not sure whereabouts in America. Um but gorgeous Um. yeah, not bad movie. I'm I'm possibly recommend it. Um. yeah. Yeah. Yeah
too old. Okay. Interesting. I watch that. Also watched uh with Daisy update uh we watched Halloween H_ two O_ 'cause I was like yeah, it was quite H_ two O_ here. Oh, can I help it? It's right, it's not I'm not really good at you, it's everybody in the world says it, but it's not Halloween water. I know, I know 'cause Daisy went, well the, chemical and I was like yeah, yeah, I mean it's Halloween twenty. They made a mistake by naming it Halloween H_ twenty, didn't they? 'Cause everyone's gonna
H_ two O_ let's, be honest, you know that, that's but anyway, it's a great movie we, love it. I g yeah 'cause, I said uh I said this is one one of the ones I kind of like 'cause it's just a bit silly. I don't mind Uh. towards the end got to mitt towards the end of it actually from this view in that was fifteen to eight or just towards the end of it was kind of a bit like there. But I do like the original setup of the school with a scru Edo call jazz security guard and like like the school and everyone leaving the school and then being left there in Jaimly
and Josh Haernet and all that stuff. Um I quite like that whole thing, but towards the end it does get a little bit boring.
It's funny 'cause we talked about Josh's Haernet, didn't we? Um on on Facebook me and you were chatting about bad haircuts in horror Courtney Cox in screen three and um Josh Haernet were two of the biggest offenders. Well yeah, yeah they're quite an interesting haircut. Well I g his haircuts have always been interesting, but I remember uh the faculty, it's pretty stretchy, and then actually in this one as well I've got it right in Oh. it's not as bad actually, it's not as bad, I got it. It's the one right here, look it's it can you see the picture of him in there little?
Oh yeah, yeah. It's not too bad in there. I was thinking of your children when I watched Creepshow actually, it's probably there's they're probably at the age where they would probably really enjoy it 'cause it is very violent and there's a bit of swearing here and there, so they'd feel like they're watching something adult, but it's done in a comic way as well. There we go.
you don't have a do you know back in the day you'd be like oh nice parents gone to bed, I'm gonna sneakily watch that
a horror a European horror movie on a Sunday night at fucking eleven thirty it's dying on channel four, you know that sort of thing sneak it. There's no way to even attempt to like that was sneaking. D they don't even need to stink now. It's just there's so much films and services they could just get their hands on so quickly and download or stream or anything. I've got no as apparent you've got no they will f watch and find anything, you've got no control. So it's nice that you're doing that. As a lot of you've been a little bit younger, 'cause he's still that, I can still
things with him. Last weekend um he's been doing a Titanic as a project so and I'd never seen it so we sat and we watched a whole movie three and a half movie three and a half hours three and a half movies three and a half hours and he probably loved it really liked it. It's like that was a really good film he said to me 'cause I realise he does really get into the emotions of drama so um for him still though, that at that age of children you can kind of uh uh s introduce them to stuff
a little bit go, oh you should check this out now. So I do that with him like uh so like uh let him watch Mad Max, like the new one. Not not the new new ones that come out of yet. And he's just like that after sort of that was amazing. So I don't know. Um but some things you can sort of do that with. But then it gets a certain age where they're just seeing control themselves and they're just they go wild.
Yeah, and it's the same with music. You know, I was into what my parents were into until I hit like ten, and then I was like no, I listened to rap music and th th th th th th what I was gonna say was it it's r it comes back around. Because with music, when I discovered rap music and stuff that my parents weren't into, I went away and listened to all of that. And then in the last ten years I come back around. Exactly. And now I'm li and I think it's the same with films, you know, with the yeah.
Yeah. Yeah.
some work I do I've, been doing for twenty years. And I think now it's like how can I do it so seamless and easy? Do you know what I mean? And every time it's really good. And it's just because it uh yeah, you've put all the the hours in and you've you've done the work. But also, as you mature and you get older, your mind and your body your, your outlook completely changes, you have a lot more peace uh in the world as well, you start to go oh whatever, and you c take out a lot of negativity in the world. And I don't know, you start to see things
and then you can see some of the films which are old and go I could really sit and appreciate that, I could really understand that and music as well. So it's it's it's in it's good it's good that we do that and there's there's different things for you, different generations. My dad's been loving what discovering the new westerns though, which is new thing. I really love in the fact that he's pretty old my, dad. But I love in the fact that before he leaves this planet, 'cause one day he will, um he's been watching all these brand new westerns, like on Paramount
the nineteen twenty three and Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren and stuff up in there. Fucking good. Really good. And I l and he's been like this is so good. It's so and I'm loving the fact that he's getting to watch the the technology that we have now to do stuff and things and how we can make stuff look really good and stream to straight away to him. Um obviously he never grew up with that. So I'm really loving the fact that he's dis discovering new shit now. So it's gonna completely flip from what you're saying. It's like oh my parents now discovering new shit is just coming out. But
going this is my mum said to me over and over Yellowstone I think it's probably the best show I've ever seen and I was like I'm glad I'm really happy that you've you know found that. Keep saying if you keep saying have you started I said no 'cause as soon as I get into I'm gonna be well into it and I know I need the time and I'm I've got lots on.
Funnily enough, the last movie that I wanted to mention, which uh is related to Westerns weirdly, um as always, me and you are sort of saying brain, um and it is it's a Marvel film, it's Logan uh from twenty seventeen. I've been re-watching all the X_Men movies in really th they're all three. And um I was sat down and w I haven't seen it since cinema. It is huge X_Men. And um I never realised the first time around, I just saw it at the cinema with a bunch of people, but this time around I never realised all the references
to Shane and um what's the uh uh the the western school chain. Yeah. Oh, it's a really famous western film um and I never re uh basically it's literally a bit uh yeah, it's really really famous to be main to Shane. Yeah. I mean it's b it's b a b a huge influence on Logan because the girl in it watches Shane with Sarina
Helen and then at the end of it she quote the last line I, never understood the L_C_D_ I never understood the last scene of Logan and now I understand she's quoting Shane uh over Wolverine's grave. So it was an amazing re-watch for me 'cause uh okay. Yeah, very famous Western. Ninety fifty three. I'll talk about ninety fifty
Sorry listeners, this is not fun for you. Keep talking then Oh. gotta be shamed. That's right okay, Yeah. A bit of my wish list.
With Logan uh it it's clearly made with an eye for people who love westerns, which I secretly do love westerns, I've mentioned it before. And yeah yeah, it's something I didn't realise I've loved really, but I I over the years I've whenever there's a western on I'll watch it. But yeah uh Logan, man, what a re-watch, and if you haven't watched it for a while, go back, watch it and re think about all the the the other movies. There's a lot of Clint Eastwood stuff in here Um. it's just great great, film Um. very emotional at the end as well, and it changed the
changes a little bit now with Dad as well. Um but me and my wife were both crying in the at the end scene a bit. But there we go. So Vin Diesel, Hugh Jackman, your Dad watching Western's Creep show, Halloween H_ two O_, m Halloween H_ twenty, Robocock and uh let's do some John Carpenter goodness now shall, we. So uh before we have a trailer for our first movie, which is Christine from nineteen eighty three, just gonna have a quick chat
about Johnny, Johnny C_ 'cause we love him and we always love to have a chat about him. To kick things off though, I thought what might inspire a bit of conversation is his movies in order of highest to lowest rating on I_M_D_B_ then this might surprise you. Um so we'll we'll go through that and we'll talk about them. What I think is interesting, like you said earlier, just to kick things off is he is the reason we love him is he has got a lot of
horror entries under his belt, hasn't he? Really solid movies.
It's quite versatile as well with the in the horror genre of the sub-genres. Like like we're talking tonight we're talking about a haunted car and another thing we talk about is uh uh otherworldly universal monstery type stuff.
And then of course he's done aliens slashers devil, um vampires, you know he's, even done um comedy, you know so, and he's done a couple of comedies actually. Uh yeah, yeah, and big trouble in a little China. Um crazy.
Yeah aliens, yeah. Um so well let's go, let's go. So number one, I'll go for the highest rated on I_M_D_B_, so the c is yeah yeah, of course. So the highest rated uh John Carpenter movie on I_M_D_B_ is The Thing. Uh that one mo that endures I can never tell which is best my favourite.
Eight point two, I guess. It's pretty solid rated on I_M_D_B_ for uh you know uh what was considered a flop in the cinema. Um so yeah, uh and of course you know we've covered it, we love it, everyone knows what we think of The Thing. Um yeah. Yeah. I think I think you've given me two Blu-ray copies, everything is. I've got two of them and I've got it on D_V_D_, and I think that's that's the one I'm gonna keep, yeah. That's the one. Yeah.
I forgot to give it to you already.
Halloween. Halloween.
It's a sol it's a s very solid movie.
It it yeah, it John got up to brought a lot of uh uh real
flay and style to it in a sort of way yeah, very subtle style, but a very solid film. It just it's very smooth and yeah.
Yeah, it's I another reason I know that John got up to my film.
I could never tell you which is my t favourite carpenter movie and I could certainly never tell you what is my top three and my top five because they dip in and out all the time, depending on what I'm thinking about what I've seen recently. You know. Yeah, and as you get older you start to appreciate things more and more. Um the the next one might surprise you. So the next highest rated gets seven point five and it's actually cigarette burns.
That's. a short yeah, Yeah. Yeah yeah, it m uh okay, but that's a short I'm, not crossing it Let's. go to the next feature. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Okay, like I was saying, this is b um obviously before or what not obviously This. was before Halloween, and like I said just then Halloween f I feel uh sorta stole This. doesn't it does have a lot of the music and stuff, but obviously with Halloween we've got the
cam and all that sort of ding-cundy stuff I. did the I th then again I don't know ding-cundy might have done a sort of precinct thirteen Um. yeah, it's a bit rough around the edges, but a good film And. the remake is solid as well If. you've never seen a remake, don't laugh at it, it's a solid movie. Oh no, that's um um Ethan Hawke and uh Lor uh S Lawrence Fishman. It's good film. Yeah, it's good. And again, proving that John Carpenter can try different genres, because that isn't that's
like a Western in a way, isn't it? I don't know. Yeah. Yeah, I can't remember the name of it now. I know the one you meet They. get held up in a bank Um. surprisingly, the next highest rated is They. live. Um seven point two. I for a long time was like this is in my top three 'cause I I got it on D_V_D_, a really good quality copy of
bit. I'd only ever really seen rough copies of it. It's such a great film and actually watching it now in twenty twenty four with the world that we live in the, cynical world of buy buy sell sell you must consume it's, so fucking relevant it's, so ahead of its time um it's just and it and it's a lot of fun as well it's, a lot of fun. I uh is one of the films I've kind of never with John Carpenters never really go to and never did so much. Then
uh I had seen it and I kind of enjoyed it as well. I couldn't remember for when we reviewed it, but when we've reviewed it, looking at it like you're saying then and now, and with v review of eyes it's uh it's a funny thing listening as if you've never uh sat in with a film, watched a film and taken notes for it, you kind of you're really looking at it, you kind of look at the film in a little bit differently. Um and with that one, I really enjoyed it more because I could go oh okay, okay, and I could see it better because I was looking at it with that clear
I_D_? indeed it it's incredible and actually it's tied with
With seven point two it's tied with Big Trouble and Little China. I mean everybody watched that as a kid and grew up It. was probably the movie where I knew who John Carpenter was as a kid. I had a party. Like I told you before, I had a party. Went went McDonald's or whatever it was. Had loads of fries and burgers. Went to the video shop before that. Picked a movie. Picked Big and Trouble, looked China. Came home, watched it. Then I've said this before, I put my bedroom upstairs, me and my mates jumped up and down on a bed doing krighty kicks
we're so fucking hyped from it we're just fighting each other after watching Big Trouble Little China that I broke my uh floor which is the loft ceiling uh sorry the, garage ceiling in a complete massive fucking crack. And only re only probably last year I, told my p mum that it's 'cause we watched that movie, mum we're upstairs jump to sh oh it's that way, yeah.
That bloody John Carpenter. Um next on the list only that was seven point two seven, point one on the list. We've covered it in our last uh John Carpenter special Escape, from New York. Incredible again, sci-fi action. Yeah, I thi I do struggle a little bit with sci-fi, it's not really my first to jump, but it you can't not like aliens to think or that sort of shit Um. and there's again it's another film I don't normally
go towards that much, but it is still fun. There's a lot of fun stuff there, the whole it's a very simple premise, go there, get the president out, you know, uh out of New York and New York's shut down. It's quite a fun idea, the music s the score's just fucking great, da-da-da-da-da-den-den. So good.
It's broken, yeah.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
you really feel like you're transported to this other world and Snake Plissken is just an incredible anti-hero.
i yeah that's the thing with that film like the f if it was just if it was Vin Diesel just Vin Di n no 'cause I did speak for it didn't, there Uh. Vin Diesel just Vin Vin Diesel not, reputin like Kurt Russell, such a character character actor as in like he will just really go to these s different characters from ca Tarantino for massive moustache or going to uh uh Snake Pliskin. It's he's always really
done stuff for his characters and I've really think he's enjoyed when he can play in that that field and it he really took it and said well I'm just gonna do the Clint Eastwood type thing a, man with no name.
Yeah yeah, great.
Okay. The hero essentially.
Snake Pliskin who is just this like real amazing stuff. And that's carp partly carpenter as well pulling that out of him you, know.
Yeah and I would say yes and no I think it's probably both of them and I would say like I said I reckon that's why he's liked working with carpenter because carpenter's like yeah that's fucking go there man. And it gives him the it gives him the uh the paper to draw the character on. Um and because it's Snake Pliskin and because he's like that it makes I would be more happy if you if that was on telly I'd be like oh I'll see him watch this. Where so many other films I wouldn't so much maybe um you know.
Well tied with Escape from New York at seven point one is also in the mouth of madness which we're covering on this episode. Um so we won't talk about it too much but um so far we've talked eight films uh seven, eight if you include cigarette burns and they're all above seven on I_M_D_B_ and that is a sign of a horror master or a director that is at the top of his skin. Yeah. Yeah I, know like some people w w but they I don't really look at rotten tomatoes as much 'cause it's a disease. And
I know it's mixed up with p like the the int uh the n not press, but you know the those reviews critics, reviews and that stuff. But IMDb generally I could watch a movie and go let's play the game and re like guess the number w from what you think it is, go look on IMDb and you're pretty much there. So it's quite nice to know that. So when you go look at a movie or shall I watch that movie, is it over five? Mm depends what it is. Yeah.
tomatoes I thought I'm D_M_D_ is what you and I would trust the most really yeah, Um. um. I do trust it yeah, it it's it's not in trust in it's not trust in a computer or uh A_R_ or anything, it's the people who obviously vote it and uh quite often like I've said I'd it s works for me.
Well, the next rated is bang on seven out of ten and, that's Starman from nineteen eighty four with Jeff Bridges, which was my mum's favourite and uh yeah. I've maybe seen half of it, it's not really
I don't even know if I'll ever be able to cover it without getting too emotional with you on on on this show maybe, won't they? Uh but um I absolutely love it. Um and again it's it's science fiction but like a tr a reman romantic science fiction sad story like John Carpenter, how have you done this? Uh yeah totally, but yeah, if you throw it to me and say do I gab some romantic science fiction, f ow I'm, ow. But there's uh but there's also some horror elements in there as well and you it's a bit like E_
in some places it is very good. Fair enough, fair enough, E_T_'s finger. Uh uh just after that is a film I've only seen once and I I can't remember anything about it and that is Elvis from six point nine get six point nine it does um playing Mister Presley which is crazy. Um and then just behind that six point eight so still really high is Christine from nineteen eighty
And again we're covering that, so we won't go into that too much. And Christine is actually tied with the fog. I'm surprised the fog isn't as high up really. A bit higher up, but um. I was gonna say that maybe it doesn't peel, but but it's more of a mass, but I don't know why. No. And again and again another style is more of a ghost pirate's, ghost pirate zombies looking for treasure. It's like a f a f a l urban legend. Can't we back for coming back for their treasure to a little town? Fuck yeah.
me in there, and it's called the fog. So is it gonna be foggy yeah, fuck yeah. Fucking fog. I love it. Um but just behind that is one that i I do think it might be in my top three now, and that's Prince of Darkness. Um because I do find the ending of that incredibly terrifying and I do love the set-up of it and the big treble cast that are in it. Yeah. I picked up on Blu-ray and I watched it again and I struggle with this film because I think the film for me is that there's it's hard one because it this is a
no, because the thing doesn't. Yeah, that was a helicopter. I think a thing with that movie is that there's no real bad person that's to to to hang on to, to to do you know what I mean, put the monocle on to such uh with the thing it's this it i the mystery it could be anybody and that kind of works really well, but it still does come in like a physical form. And this one you do c in in that movie do get people who are obviously a
taken over their mind and they start killing uh uh from the from the green goo. But I dunno Don't. just doesn't still doesn't really I don't go oh yeah I watch that film but, it does I dunno why. It doesn't hit for me. It it has got loads of his old actors in it. Big trouble with trying to actors and all sorts. Um fog actors Donald. But it's just doesn't it's like uh dunno. Yeah do, do you like the
Yeah, well like I just said, for a while I I think it m might be might have been in my top three. You know, I do move them around a lot. The thing always stays in the top three, but i it's so difficult with Johnny. Um ne Johnny c Johnny C_. The next on the list isn't one that he directed, but he pretty much helped get it off the ground. So I will just mention it briefly, and it's Halloween two. Um that gets six point five Um. yeah, and and I really like Halloween two.
s fact in some ways I prefer it. Feels like a cleaner um I've said this before when we reviewed it, it feels like a cleaner sort of version of the first one. I like the hospital setting I. appreciate the support. Yeah. After that, tied with it oh, sorry, just below it, sorry, six point two is dark star. Uh his first sort of feature really. Um yeah, I've seen
Um, I don't remember much about it. Um, in the far reaches of space a small crew twenty years into their mission finds things beginning to go hilariously wrong.
Yeah, it doesn't, you know, not wrong for aliens. Uh, and then tied with that is one that we've covered. Body bags with six point two. Fantastic.
We've we've done body bags, we have done it.
That's what I actually thought.
Yeah, we've done it. Toby Hooper, John Carpenter, Larry Sulkis directing. Yeah. Yeah, the hair transplant. Come on. Yeah. Yeah. Who's that? Casey Steech. And then let's move down to the bottom of the list nows. But these are still rated relatively high. Six point one, we got vampires. I d it was alright. It's one too bad If. s if I come back for him
it's kind of okay, I don't know. Yeah, it does drag me. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Uh with just six points, memories of an invisible man, I think we should cover it, I think it'd be a fun one for us to talk about Chevy, Chase, Darryl, Hannah, Sam, Neil. I uh yeah, totally yeah, Sam, Neil's a
bad guy. I I like I do like Chevy Chase, even though I know he's a moody fucker. And most people said he's very hard to work with. Yeah, yeah. Um but I think maybe our next John Carpenter one, we might cover that, pair it up with something like assault on precinct thirteen for a little bit of the ups and downs in John's career. Um but that gets six, and then below that, and again he didn't direct it, but it's a fingerprint so certainly all over it, you've already talked about it, Halloween H_ twenty, uh five point eight, and
I_M_D_B_ Um. we both absolutely love that He. didn't know. Like I said with how many st oh we can't start going into no, don't start going into p shoot shoot stuff. Oh no, 'cause he's got fingerprints on loads of stuff, no? Uh after that five point seven we'll probably cover it some day Escape. from L_A_ I. re-watch that uh r yeah and it was alright. Um Ben came round. That's director of uh director of photography for dead
films, and uh we were hanging out, we were doing some editing or something, uh we ate some dinner, and we sat and watched a scale from L_A_ I was like fucking sure I should actually go s I don't remember this, and I was like we watched it, doing bits of it which is okay, but then it was all and then I said to him here he is, Steve Buscemi and him fucking surfing and the C_T_I_ and it's just like this is awful.
Casey Steech.
Casey Steech and Bruce Cus Bramble and Ruert Cussle as well. Directed by Con Jarpenter. Um that's five point seven five, point six, and I would like to talk about this, starring Superman himself and Kirstie Alley, village of the damned. It's I love it.
I've got a D_V_D_ in there waiting to watch it and almost put it on today. Um funny enough, in that poll is someone's watching me. And that must be you must be getting to that soon. Well, he directed it.
Um but heard.
Uh yeah.
And do you ha should have there someone's somebody's watching me.
Oh of course, still going aren't we. Ghosts of Mars. Tried to watch that again couple within the last couple of years and it's such a weird movie.
Okay Jason, Stephen, okay with Pam Grier Uh. uh Pam Grier and Ice Cube you could maybe put 'em together in a type of film. Possibly that would work. But all of a sudden Jason, Stephen's like okay, and then there's some more odd characters in there.
It's got this kind of industrial soundtrack, then the vampires are like this post-apocalyptic type f vampory type of things and it's just not fun. It's just like it's not a fun film.
um uh it was originally gonna be Escape from the the third Escape movie Escape. from Earth I think it was gonna be called or Escape from Mars and then in the end Kurt Russell didn't wanna be involved and then they kind of it all got the script got mucked around and you can just feel the studio's interference in that one um. Yeah. I I'm sure after you saw Escape from L_A_ and went oh, okay. Yeah. Well for some reason somebody's watching isn't on this list so let
just find that and find tell you what the um I don't know why that isn't on this list. Maybe 'cause it wasn't really officially released but, it's s yeah let, me just leave. Yeah. Yeah, I don't know what else That. that so it's a T_V_ movie, uh a lady uh in her apartment and um starts getting b paranoid. Someone's watching her. So it's kind of a kind of your slashery type of thing, but it's it's
a T_V_ movie, it's it's not you know, it it gets six point six. And I'm like sort of got the D_V_D_ of it. Um well I picked up it. It's quite hard to get ahold of, but I picked up a long time ago. And then and then that's it. But there's only other two other films I would quickly mention. One is um Halloween three, Season of the Witch, which again you kind of associate with John Carver too, even though it's not him. Um one that I'd never seen until my good friend Gav gave gave me a copy of it, I believe, or or told me to
watch it I. I have it on D_V_D_ And. that is it's called Black Moon Rising uh it's got the yeah it's wi which is a weird field that Tommy Lee Jones, Linda Hamilton um and a thief is hired by the Justice Department to steal incriminating tapes from the Crap Corporation. The tapes vanish when Quint decides to hide them in the back of a hydrodynamic powered racing car stolen by a hot car ring. And I absolutely fucking loved it. Yeah. Uh wh there you
did he didn't direct it. He wrote it and produced. Yeah. Um and it feels a bit like a John Carpenter film. But there we go. It's a big list Well. it's not a big list, but there are so many big hitters on that list. That's why he's our our favourite and he's got a signature, he's got a style and he can adapt to many different genres. Um. I mean he popped back up in a
Studio six six six it's fun to see him in that. I don't know. He was having fun in that he's been having fun he's really about to release a fifth album I think with his son. Um I think he's enjoying doing that and smoking pot on playing computer games. And and collecting royalty checks. I I honestly wouldn't be mad if he never made another film 'cause I think leave your legacy as is you, know. Well that's like if w the w when the wad came out wasn't, it we all were all like a amazing then we watched you go uh.
And that that's what Tarantino is now doing. He's got his last film, he's in production at the moment and that's his last one and I'm sure it'll be just as good as most of his other ones and that'll be the c 'cause someone said on i on his Facebook page, whether it was a sacrificial payer page or whatever, it said oh, why don't you uh be great if you directed a movie or something and I chimed in and said uh but making music's just so much more easier, you could got you could just sit by yourself and do it, you don't have to
the interference of loads of people. But and then John Carpenter chimed in. And I don't remember what he said. It but it was kind of like he was kind of going against me almost a bit and I said no no it's, not the reason. And he sort of s I don't know what he said. But John Carpenter stepped in 'cause I'd said oh I'm making musics either then. He stepped in saying no that's, not the reason. I was like but I can't remember what it was really. That's the shit end of the story. Yeah. And he performed for us
privately. Just it wasn't music. It was just dance. Interpretive dancing. We'd sat shout out the name of one of his films and he'd have to do a sexy dance. Big trouble in little China. It did it did it did it did it. Yeah. The thing. Oh. When he started dancing the thing, I
that was weird. It was when his body started doing those weird movements and then the clothes came off, I don't know. Anyway.
Well that's that Listen. we, love John Carpenter, that's why we're covering him as uh for our fourth director special. I th I liked the one when he started putting his hands on his groin and over his nipples when I said somebody's watching me and he's like ooh, ooh, ooh. Yeah, that was a good dance.
in the mouth of madness he misheard me and he put something else in my life. That was that was very bad. But um. Yeah. No, I'd like to explain I'd like to explain the sexiness a bit more. Uh well, talking of sexiness, let's talk about sexy cars. Let's have a trailer for a a lovely little murder mobile. Christine.
Sonny, you ever owned a car before?
I know. I just got my license.
Start 'er up.
Her name's Christine.
I like that.
I saw you guys at the football game.
How'd you forget that car fixed up like that?
Oh, this plain old-fashioned hard work, huh?
Ever since he bought that car, he's been obsessed with it.
And you know what else?
They told us the man who owned that car last died in it. What do you know about that car?
I know there's a guy who owned the car before, aren't he? His daughter choked to death in Christine.
It's that car. I swear it's the car.
That's Christine coming.
Oh, Cherry.
That's funny, you know, 'cause I I heard you was told.
Well, after I cleaned up the broken glass, it wasn't so bad.
So what if you
you fix it up, you know, and he just comes back and does it again?
He won't do it again.
So.

Okay, so Christine from, nineteen eighty three, a nerdish boy buys a strange car with an evil mind of its own, and his nature starts to change to reflect it. Obviously directed by Johnny C_ uh, written by Stephen King, a novel, and helped bring to the screen with the help of somebody called Bill Phillips as well. Um so Stephen King meets John Carpenter.
uh it's always interesting when we have Stephen King with different filmmakers uh uh and how they work with his materials. Always so interesting like misery compared to the shining compared to obviously the different stories and different things going on. But it's coming from the same mind. But then taking that into the mind of someone else 'cause it's it's it's totally that thing when when when you're directing a film um you're taking the words that you've read and you're
just as you read a book like everybody does 'cause everybody could really direct uh y everyone has a vision. When you read something you can imagine it and you just imagine how that picture is in your head and then just conf transfer that to the uh the director of photography to capture it. Then the editor, everybody knows how film's made I. don't need to tell everyone this. But everybody obviously is different. All humans are different. You could give five people in the room all friends the same story to go off and do something
uh uh go and tell this story and tell it your way and they'd all do it differently as to where it is. So it's so interesting when we have all these movie directors then you get something like Stanley Kubrick comes along Stephen King's like oh fucking oh fucking hate that movie oh do my own and stuff like that. And then and the time is Stephen King's like we gotta do something right you gotta do it yourself and s declares Max Merrives drives like the is Max S. Opus. But interesting. So this time though you got John Carmtard
J_C_ Not. Jesus Christ, not Joan Collins. Not Jackie Chan. Not Jim Carey. Or John Carpenter. So what do you you're you're a big fan of this one, aren't you? I am. Yeah, it's again it's sometimes in my top three. Um I am a huge Stephen King fan um and read the book
w when I was quite young. It's a uh it's a a full novella It's. not like a short story Yep. 'Cause I know that's silver bullet obviously was uh from a short story of Stephen King's. Yeah. Um my dad uh were joined one of those clubs in the back of a Sunday magazine where you order I dunno how many books it is and you get a book every month back in the sort of eighties and I realise now as as an older person that he was doing some of that for me 'cause a lot of the books he'd ordered would be Stephen King books, which is how I read a lot of the ones I
But yeah, I read the book, loved it, really loved the whole um nerd s p kinda it was kinda like Spider-Man for me, it was like a nerd gets powers in a way um and becomes popular but then realises he's got to overcome demons. I loved it.
See, what you're telling me, I I I like what you're telling me there if it was recast to someone likeable against the car.
We'll come to that in a minute. Um 'cause I I've got some stuff to say about the cast as well. Um but but then when I I didn't see the movie 'cause obviously it came out in eighty three, I would end up in five. I didn't see the movie probably 'til I was in my like mid-teens fifteen sixteen. But because it was John Carpenter, I was like oh my God, like I was really nervous to watch it 'cause it was like oh my God, my favourite horror director and my favourite writer and I watched it and actually yes, I've fed enough with it. Um I really really d I haven't ha I went for his period not watching it for a very long time 'cause
wasn't really anywhere. And now I've watched it so many times, in fact I've I've reviewed it when I guest on guested on um eternal darkness of the not so spotless mind, Kate in Matt's show. Um that was my my pick. Uh and uh this is my second time reviewing it, I'm more than happy to do so. Um absolutely love it. What I love about it is it feels like a Stephen King film, but it feels like a John Carpenter film. I don't know how that w for me anyway, this is my personal take. I don't know how that works, but
feels like both. And I think the reason is is because it's set in nineteen s in the late seventies. It's not set now or when the film is made in the eighties. It's a slightly period piece. And then you've got the fact that the car is from the fifties and plays music from the fifties. So it all feels very period piece, which is why it feels so Stephen King. But then it's shot with that John Carpenter style and that glossiness that he sometimes
and it's a very shiny, red, glossy car and I love some of the sort of the kills in it and the car itself definitely feels like it's its own entity Talking. of the characters, what I love about them, and I will let you speak in a minute, I promise, but what I love is for me personally, all the characters are so much more um deeper and perhaps that's some people don't like it 'cause the film m is a bit longer than some of his other ones, but I love the deepness of the characters.
all have a little arc. For example, Dennis is a jock, but he's friends with Arnie and Nerd, and we've seen this occasionally in films. They shouldn't be friends, but they are, just because they are. They probably grew up together and Dennis feels he has to be loyal to Arnie. The girl character in it, Lee, she isn't your typical sort of cheerleader girl. And even the guy Darnell that runs the junkyard, he's an asshole when you first meet him, but actually you realise he's got a bit of a good heart and he likes Arnie
he lets him work on the car there for pretty much for free. Um and everybody in it's got layers to them. Obviously you've got your bad guys, the the group of kids at school who are about forty five years old. Um a and the you know the some of the b the various stereotypes. But I do love that that they're all quite layered for the most part. The other thing I love about this, which I wanted to mention now so w this won't be able to come up while we review it, is for me I've realised over the last few years
this is potentially Stephen King's book is potentially about his cocaine addiction because it's about a just a normal kid with glasses, your average Joe, and then he discovers this thing cocaine, or Christine, that then makes him feel really confident, really um gets him lots of attention. Yeah, so with Christine being cocaine, he suddenly becomes really confident, then gets really cocky, stops wearing
glasses, starts tr fighting his dad, swearing at his mum, and basically if he replaced the car with coke, that's kind of what's happening in this. He then starts pushing his friends away, calling his girlfriend a fucking bitch on the phone. Doesn't really know why he's doing all of this, and so we're gonna be taking him. Yeah, because he's a coke head, or in this case a car head, whichever way you wanna do it. But I also realise that as an adult, and having m I d have
someone go through quite bad cocaine addiction. Um yeah, I've seen this, but in real life, but obviously without a magic car. So that's another thing that I really love about it and whether or not King intended that, I feel like he channeled his own life into a lot of films and I should imagine that this is a little bit of a metaphor for addiction of sorts Um. yeah, I I think a m a lot m a lot of his books it's b a lot of metaphors in it of his life and stuff
it. But yeah that uh uh so you know, that's me really Obviously. I I love this film, so I'm gonna be gushing all over it Um. really though. You're the other side of the coin. Because you'd only seen it once before hadn't, you? Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
a haunted car that kills people directed by John Carlton I'll. be like fucking yeah that's pretty cool. For whatever reason I find this film just doesn't sit f with me um and I obviously that might not be a popular opinion um 'cause a lot of people um like this film and I feel like my r maybe it's nostalgia or something but, I watched it the first time I found it a bit dull so I watched it for this time and reviewed it and like I said earlier about review your eyes when you watch a film, it's a little bit different and I really watched it and
It's it's a weird movie for me. There's there's just stuff that it's wrong. It doesn't sit well. Like there is free axe really the free axe would be buy car, car kills, try and get rid of car, there's your free axe. And th this one it feels so like the first half of it feels like the first act. Just g just uh oh oh more and more and then and like you say it's deep, it's getting into the the kids and stuff. But I don't feel it's
very well cast. I don't like any of the I've never seen them before in anything else. I don't th th th they didn't go on to do other stuff and why is that? Because they're possibly not that likeable. Obviously I know you do and you love it and a lot of people will. And I'm sure most people say I'm wrong. Um but it it's not in the top ten normally chatted about is it, let's be honest. So it's the garbage's films. Yeah. Yeah.
does these shots John Carter have for the car, following the kid with the long spat-let with the smokes, and then the m his music comes in and you look straight like John Carter, boom. This movie even should start at the beginning with the car going along 'cause like that that scene should be at the beginning and stalking someone and killing someone. I've been like I've been down with that movie from going man that's fucking pretty good, that's getting to that they got me. It just plods the first half plods and plods Then. when you get the first time the car actually does his thing it gets all
gangster goes, right, I'm gonna go after the people that tried to fucking destroy or did destroy me, and it starts hunting 'em down. That's a fucking cool movie. I wanna see that movie as the movie. I know you need story, I understand, and it's so it it's too long, it needs to be ninety minutes and cut out at least twenty-five to m twenty nine minutes of it. I totally get that, and I I think, you know, it's an hour and fifty, I think if if it was cut down to maybe an hour and f even just an hour and forty or an hour and thirty if you could, you'd wanna get
that a bit quicker, some of that stuff, like you said. So for you, you'd be looking at like a chopping a good fifteen, twenty minutes out of this really, but but again, I think there's a reason that Stephen King likes this one uh as one of his, you know, pf um interpretations of one of his writing and, that's because John Carpenter does his best to trying and to do a do justice to the book and and keeps a lot of the story in it. Um and I I
I'm here for the story, you know, I I've read the book first, I'm not one of those people that says the book's better than the film 'cause, sometimes that's not the case, but uh oh yeah. Yeah, of course. Can you just can you just replace it with Kit, the Knight Rider car, and Kit's having a bad day and he just goes
fucking ape shit and kills everyone. Well I do like things like this and I tell you what uh uh of a car movie I do like is The Car. I think that's a fantastic movie, I really fucking enjoy that film um and that is more the B_ movie I feel like I want with this but the f trouble is well it's not trouble it's only trouble is for me because every all of you guys like it Thing. is though, it's it's coming from a book by Stephen King book where the car isn't and that's where you are getting the the
what it is with a book. I don't read that much just because my brain struggles to do it. But like um when I do read, James Herbert's someone I can read actually in photos, a British author. Um I can um I can kind of like you do with like I was saying with script stuff, you start to envision it and really feel it and you really get involved in it. And with Stephen King, I've always liked Maine and always liked uh the movies where we get these little town always peopled and you start to like Salem's lot, it's quite
long obviously, but you really slowly like a T_V_ sh series, you start to get all know the cats a lot more. And that's why with this, it is I'm going saying it's plodding, but when it comes down to you're taking it from a novel, so there's a lot more involved in there, a lot more lies, like you're saying, because it's Stephen King's writing. For me, it just doesn't work. So that that's it. I don't wanna be the sh all shitty with it and stuff, but I'm trying to be positive with it. But at the same time, fifteen percent of it's fucking amazing.
So it's it's this is gonna be in a really interesting conversation back and forwards 'cause you're gonna be saying really s gosh I should have it on, but uh I won't be coming in negatively, but at times I'm not even able to have that much notes. I might even go go for a jog and you can carry on talk.
Well uh you know, it's it's a film from nine eighty three, so there's definitely some stuff that's wrong with it um you know and stuff that hasn't aged well and there's also some stuff we can laugh at. I've already mentioned that the kids at the school all look like they're in their forties, it's like Greece.
Oh. my God. The main bully is th like literally thirty thirty five or so. It's like what are you doing at college? You sad fuckers. Go and do something as but it's honestly this is l this is definitely before the internet, wasn't it It's. like go and do something. Like literally stop bullying kids at high school, you fucking thirty five year old. I I love it. The Afro dude who Bill Murray fucking
electric shocks and, and the guy that sells the car is the um old man Marley from uh Home Alone, the show s snowsho uh snow shoveler. It's a skinny one who's really unfunny who doesn't die he, stays at the diner in a uh one at the Friday thirteenth part two. And and I I don't like that guy. And you mean and he's at why is he in a gang You? look at him, he'd be like just flick him, he's gonna fall over. You've got two actually people from
Home Alone, 'cause you've got old man Marley, he's the guy that sells the car. You've also got Darnell, who runs the junkyard, is the guy from Home Alone 2 who runs the toy shop. Um so you got that. And then of course we got Harry Dean Stanton in this as well as the cop on the trail. I bet he loved that bit where at the at the moment he shows up and he's like mm, look at this colour red. You can't just buy this pe colour red anyway 'cause, that's kind of like your I actually yeah, I actually quite liked uh uh oh no no, for the safety b no no, no, no, that's not that doesn't work in that
I know where you're going. No no no I. I just mean the detective aspect isn't, it. Oh yes of course. And I do like seeing him as a a bit younger uh obviously I've seen him in stuff a bit older. Tell you what, I w I did watch a movie last night. This movie had just come out of Piers Brosnan as a hitman uh Charlie something, whatever. And he lives with a guy um uh who's um
James Cagney. No James, can't fucking James Cagney James. can't and he's looks so old in it. And obviously people age, I understand, but he he
Yeah. Like wow, he's acting Wow. okay, like that old. Like to the point I didn't recognise him, it took me a moment to go oh my God it's James Carnes. Yeah bless, him. You know and, we all get old. Um so yeah.
Well before, we get started on the story then, things to look out for obviously that John Carpenter's signature is there's some great camera shots as you've already touched on there's, some score which, is awesome.
B-b-b-b-bed and a bone. B-b-b-b-bed and a bone.
he gives life to this this car, this entity through just through to camera shots, point of view, that kind of thing. Just creepy little camera movements tracking, shots um and it just feels like definitely you can feel his his fingerprints all over it.
Yeah, totally. Uh another thing when Ben was over, we just chat about film stuff, he actually mentioned Christine, and um I said I wasn't really into it, and he said um he loves it, Ben loves it. And I was like I'm not a massive car head, but I know you're not you d a car head either really. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No, no. I appreciate, you know, a c a classic car I. think cars all look the same these days, but yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. I know what you mean.
Sometimes though sometimes we review films and I'm not that keen to review it and stuff, but but because I didn't really like the film, but it's not really that keen to review it. It's 'cause I wasn't keen to watch the film in the first place. But when I do come to review it, I end up having more fun review ooh uh uh talking about the movies than actually watching them. And this might be the case.
Well Christine, just so you know everybody who's interested is a nineteen fifty eight Plymouth Fury. Um although they do call her a fifty seven Plymouth Fury in the film but um she m it really is actually a nineteen fifty eight Plymouth Fury. And it's a beautiful looking car. Uh lovely colour as well. But let's get started then. So we start as we should in an assembly line we're watching Christine be born a bit like Chucky being assembled and quite
rightly Gav, you mentioned it already but, I'd like you to repeat to your little lyric.
B-b-b-b-band to the bone. B-b-b-band to the bone. I kept it I it sa I sa I said I was doing it s Sarah to the point where I was really enjoying going b-b-band to the point I kept it so much she just looked at me and I said she goes you could do this throughout the whole wet uh review aren't, you and I said I w I won't but, it is quite enjoyable going b-b-b-band.
can you do one t do a quick one? Give it a real give it a real b b
I I
the transformer who speaks through the radio and plays songs that match the situation Christine very cleverly will be doing that throughout this film. But yes so we're on the assembly line bad so the bone is playing we're watching cars being built by hand mainly because you know that's how it was back then um and we get very shiny nice camera work here and there's only one bright red car in the assembly line, blood red you might say Gav, blood red.
How did the uh how did the uh car get haunted then?
Um well we I I don't know if it's even said in the book, it just is.
Well it's just make him of some for whatever reason this car just t t just turns somehow t s becomes alive and kills f f people for no reason at all.
Uh let's say that Charles Lee Ray's b spirit goes inside it.
See I'm I'm finding flaws already.
Um and yeah this one red car it is is evil because the first thing we see it do is a guy puts his hand under the hood and uh or bonnet if you're from the U_K_ and um it crushes his hand.
I guess sometimes we watch movies we, get to the end of the movie and go oh we're not gonna find out any reason why then no no okay cool. Which is a little sloppy from a novelist like Stephen King.
Um alright well it's not it's uh yeah I, I guess not. Okay. It's just s
Mm-hmm.
I don't wanna get into it.
Hungry.
Okay.
But anyway the first thing we s see within the first few m moments is a guy gets hand crushed under the bonnet uh and the radio is playing lots of fifties rock. They take the guy away with a big bandage on his hand and he's like ooh. Um and then another guy gets in the car and he's smoking a big cigar and he drops some ash on the seat. Oh Christine's not gonna like that.
And she doesn't because the next shot we see is everybody's left, the uh the uh the assembly line's over at the end of the shift. But we ca we hear the radio playing in one of the cars.
I don't wanna keep going back to it, but it would have been nice surely to have had like something happen and then like Charles played original he we see a transference to the doll. It'd be nice to actually have seen a cause.
we don't know why. 'Cause when he when the guy who sells in the car tells him about his brother and his wife and kid who all died in the car, it just makes you think well there's why is this car so demonic? And they don't know what they're up against then. Whereas if they knew they were up th up against the spirit of a somebody in the car, they would be like oh what's his you know what's his weakness.
Why does the car later on obviously towards the end it's driving around being angry by itself, doing its own fucking thing. Why does it care about what people think or anything? Why does it just drive off down a road and start fucking killing everyone? Why does it hide out? It's true s evil spirit. It's evil. But the thing about evil, Gabby is there is no reason. There is no reason That's. what makes evil really evil. It's whether it's no reason Well. there's a reason
you're like uh well maybe just give this guy a kitten and he'll be nice to people. So we'll just go with that anyway Alright. cool. So the guy that puts the ash on the car seat is found dead inside the car by the guy that runs the assembly line and that is how we start things off. That then we cut to nineteen seventy eight. So this movie is set in nineteen seventy eight through to early uh seventy nine 'cause we go through Christmas and New Year throughout this film.
And we need it does with the the the car shots, the interior shots, where it's driving along through the roads and the clothing, what they're wearing it is and and just the way it's shot, it's Halloween. It's Jamie Curtis and the cob with um the other have buddies.
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
he's he's a nice guy, you know, he doesn't really wanna play football uh and he won't be able to after a while. Um and he you know he gets girls throwing themselves at him, but he's a bit nervous about girls too, you know he's s starting college and he pulls up outside Arnie's house. Now this isn't Arnie that you might think. This is nerdy, I'm tripping over stuff on the floor and spilling stuff everywhere, written around his style. Arnie, Arnie you, silly little
man Arnie, isn't it? They're best friends. Don't know why. I think they've probably been friends f since they were very young and one of them grew up to be a handsome, strapping young man and the other one is a nerd, but they've stayed friends and that's it. And uh y you get the impression Arnie's parents are ashamed of him that oh don't forget you're pat lunch Arnie, you're off to col it's your first day at college today. Oh they are ashamed to
of him. They they all the way through they sort of berate him and you know they they won't basically treat him as a child, don't they, all the way through. Um Dennis is watching all of this from the car like oh my God. But then they get in the car and he says to uh Arnie well we're starting college now Arnie and I think it's about time that we got you laid. And uh Arnie's like laid. He's clearly a virgin, you know he doesn't doesn't know what to do with it if it's
in front of him. Well thi this has the classic the the he wears glasses. He's obviously fucking a virgin and not cool. And then uh uh uh then the glasses come off. Well they do once the cocaine's hits or the car takes over. I uh I think they'll skate and go back to this though. This is quite amusing. You know like uh there's a certain you might walk into a certain thing and some people would go to a certain person because they might feel more comfortable
person so there I was skating uh earlier and it was uh this underground car park which has been disused uh so there's loads of like teenagers smoking weed and doing shit in one corner there's, motorbikes going around there's, broken glass everywhere there's, loads of skaters but there's different types of little groups of skaters and they're all a lot younger I mean only one there is forty seven skating around with a beard and everything you know they're, all like sort of seventeen eighteen or whatever and uh but this other kid
came along, skate came in and he wear glasses. It came straight up to me. He's alright I, don't fist bump me and I was like, is Axon wearing glasses? Then my other mate turned up who's wearing glasses and he carried to him and there's all three of us standing there with all glasses and I was like is it like a thing you do? You sort of go towards someone you, go oh they're wearing glasses I'll go towards them, they're probably safe. People do treat you differently when you wear glasses. When I put my glasses on, I put them on my eyesight it's re weirdly got a bit better over the last few years, but I do wear the
occasionally. When I do, I feel like people do treat me better. It's weird. I don't know why. Don't know where that is. It's great. Good for him. Good for Arnie. Well, they get to college. And we find out that Dennis is quite popular. He's got a lot of friends and and girls that know him as well and girls that want to be with him. Um and uh but he's uh he's a bit nervous about them still. We find out, you know, he's not he he's
not as good with the women as people think he probably is. And uh Arne's having trouble with his locker, all the usual stuff. We we get to meet the new girl, Lee, who's just arriving at at college and everybody's in love with her. Look at Lee, she's beautiful. Here she is. Oh, one day. A lot of um unsavoury things are said. Um in fact there's a couple of words in this that we won't be saying that they say about homosexual stuff and that stuff as well, but um it was made in
eighty two probably, so we have to overlook these things a little bit. Uh Buddy though, Buddy and his friends, we meet Buddy, don't we? Buddy, Buddy is the thirty five year old child. The the the guy who's like a fucking who's been watching uh uh Grease too much and decided that he's gonna start a gang of his own, and he's even got his own little flick knife, and when he pulls a flick knife out on him you're like, what are you doing? Like what are you actually doing for your life?
go and do something right now. It's just uh, yeah, set the scene.
thing. 'Cause Dennis Dennis is basically waiting to drive Arnie home and he can't find him anywhere and then somebody says, oh I hear his buddies uh got him cornered with his gang in the workshop. So they go he goes to the um the D_I_Y_ class with all the machinery and stuff and he walks in and they've got Arnie's they're surrounded him and they've got his pat lunch and they're throwing it around. I'm like that you're start what is this going what the fuck's up with it I? was like 'cause at first I was like who are they who's these guys and who's that man?
it it like with the he like why is he they're doing this? Is it oh I thought it was something else going on then. It's like he's the head buddy stealing the lunch box from the kid. Like wha No. no, honestly fire, the fucking casting agent for this film please, Yeah. Oh, he is called Cunningham, which I thought was quite uh uh ahead of its time in a uh oh well. Yeah.
I know what's going on Dan, I'm just saying because you're saying the word cunt, I thought it was quite forward for the time. It is yeah, totally, and it's p probably the first time I'd heard it in a film when I watched this. Um uh Dennis though, not the biggest guy but, he's still a bit of a jot and he does stand up for Arnie and he says come on, give him his lunch back. Well I I think he's probably thinking c come on dude, this is pretty low if I can try and stick up with yourself and if not like you guys stop doing that 'cause that's just fucking pathetic from all of you.
They get into a bit of a scrap and like you say, buddy pulls out a flick knife and it's like okay this just went from crushing someone's yogurt to greaselatne to fucking slashing somebody up over a fucking lunch box. Arnie's glasses obviously get stamped on Dennis punches uh the main guy.
And then thankfully the teacher walks in and breaks up the fight.
He says to them what's been going on here um and they say well they b uh Dennis says b well basically they were picking on Arnie. And he says is this true and he's like no it's not me and he's like I don't believe you. And then he says he's got a knife on him and the teacher's and buddy looks really pissed off.
And he says is that true? And he goes no, I haven't got a knife. And then he says Arnie, is it true? And he says yeah, he's got a knife on him. And he says empty your pockets. And he goes he says you can't make me a fuck. And he says I can make you. I can just call the police. So he ends ends up showing him the knife and he is in serious trouble. And he says right, go to the office. And he sort of squares up to the t he squares up to the teacher and then he sort of says I'll make you pay for this. He says I'll make you pay
for this you fuckers, r in front of the teacher, like you're not doing yourself any favours mate, you've w you've gone from saying you didn't do anything to
Murder.
Oh God.
children. Yeah, that course was popular with some people.
So Arne sort of says, oh God, I'm gonna be in trouble now because we basically dobbed in on the biggest bully in the world. But and then it then it says don't worry, I think it'll probably be alright. And he drives him home. He's got his glasses with a bit of tape, keeping them together. You know, he's got that real look. Uh he says look, I heard Buddy and all of his friends got expelled. Don't worry about it. You know, he won't be seeing them again. And as they drive along, they see an old car in somebody's yard for sale, bit rusted.
looking. And I only said stop, stop, go back. What this and something about this car is like a a mermaid siren to him. So w how what what so he so he's feeling like this car's amazing 'cause it's pulling him i but the co is the car is Christine the car decided that guy there is gonna do and is pushing that magic out for him to pull on it. So even though we don't know what the car
is, what the soul is or ghost or anything, we're just that's okay.
Okay.
Uh I'm presuming he was on cocaine when he wrote this as well.
Yeah.
I think cocaine is involved.
And this is where we meet LeBay, who is the owner of the c of the car. And he says you like her? Her name's Christine.
And uh he says oh she's beautiful I'll give you anything you want for whatever price you're asking's not enough. It's like whoa slow down there cowboy. He's like uh you're not gonna you know. He says well she's uh a beautiful car she, still works, she needs a lot of work. Uh. I
well his mate has to eventually go over to the ghost center and say listen listen can, he go easy on him y you know he he's a bit stupid.
And he says um she was b she was my brother's in nineteen fifty seven he, bought her then. He's dead now. Um but I ge and he says he'd give me two hundred and fifty dollars. He's like alright yeah sure. Don't know where on he gets two hundred and fifty bucks from, but he's got it. And uh yeah he, buys Christine. It's just
every day is normal with two hundred and fifty dollars. And there's ha a coincidence and happy coincidence that he happens to have the exact amount. Or does he carry around more than that generally? In nineteen eighty three. True true, true. And I'm not I'm not trying to give negative to this film by the way. I'm not trying to do that.
He we see we see the first signs of his parents being unhappy about this because at the dinner table he says oh wife uh by the way I've b I'm gonna get be getting my license 'cause I bought a car.
I did come to this conclusion originally. I did later on in the film uh sp it's like this dude's like got his getting a car he's gonna try and do up it's like a real good project if that was me as a parent as I am a parent of teenagers oh I wanna do this and do it up I'll be like fuck yeah that's a great project for you to do and then you'll be independent
then, you can go and get work further 'cause you drive or go yeah. It's it's yeah outside, just working on the card. They're not like yeah, I'd be like straight away. So I don't understand why they're i i uh what's in the mind of Stephen King, isn't it? But I don't understand why the parents have to be such cunts. So so so p put him off the
because the car could potentially kill him and, that would take the him away from them. Is that is that where they're going at, do you think, with it? It's i is that I I I I have to be sometimes with my kids, cruel to be kind, I'll say stuff to them, but I'll explain afterwards. I love you to bits. I have to be this and be this shit and say this to you because I'm sa um you know, protecting you from da-da-da-da-da and explain myself sometimes to them and stuff. That's just what they need to do rather than just be a cunty go see, we
we've made that better. Not really.
Well he says to them just let me have this one fucking thing for once in my life and they're like you don't use language like that in this house.
Yeah uh and like this bit here is okay really when you do like that 'cause it's a nice part of uh showing sort of dynamics of uh uh uh characters and structures of what's going on. And it works quite well actually but yeah there comes.
He ends up saying she ends up saying you're not keeping the car at this house. Again why? 'Cause it
It then it makes him go somewhere else and also be totally pissed off by the parents, which later on comes into fruition.
Yep. So he goes to the junkyard. There's a junkyard owned by Darnell, and it's basically a bit of a D_I_Y_, help yourself, you can do your car up here, you just pay m pay for the parts as you find them in the junkyard, and it's gonna be really next to nothing. Uh you can just keep the car parked there. So he does that, he goes there, and we meet Darnell, and he's very foul-mouthed, swearing a lot. He says I know a creep when I see one, and I'm looking at one right now. He's always chewing on a big
car and then he says um I'll let you th keep the car here, but if you make any fuck-ups at all yeah, and all this kind of stuff um even says you know no smoking and Dennis sort of says hey y what about those guys over there you're playing cards with they're all smoking. You say. Yeah. No no that's, it that's, it.
it says though uh uh is like don't do those show do those fumes again in here 'cause he drives the car and the fumes are fucking intoxicating and it's like yeah you, don't do that again. So how is he gonna be able to know if he's fi I guess he's just gonna fix the car obviously uh and and and fix that problem when he turns it on it again 'cause I was thinking that you you're asking quite a lot 'cause he's needs to test it. So the fumes are probably gonna come.
again. So it's just because he ain't got an exhaust, okay. Yeah, yeah yeah
you and Dennis just looks at his friend thinking you are one sorry son of a bitch man, I fucking feel sorry for you, your parents are bastards and this is all you've got and they won't even let you do that. Well exactly as you said you know, just let 'em have this one thing you know.
And there we go, so there's there's the sort of the scene that's been set really and we get some shots now of Arnie working on the car night by night, he's doing little bits here and little bits there and already he's not wearing his glasses, Gav. So the superpowers are infecting him, their soul's uh well to me it's like the c the car's got a soul and the soul is starting to infect Arnie.
And that's why he doesn't need his glasses, that's why he starts getting a bit more of a swagger in his walk and his talk. Um yeah, he's he's just not wearing the glasses anymore and Darnell comes over to him and says like you're doing a good job on this kid actually, you know you've been working hard. I'm gonna cut you a bit of slack, I think what I'll do is um if you can sort of tidy up around the place, maybe put the toilet rolls on the new toilet rolls in the bathroom and you know just keep the place looking okay, maybe unpack a few b boxes for us here and there.
I'll let you just have anything you want for free. I might even pay you if you do a good job for some of the work you do. And he says oh thanks very much, you know, he's pleased with that. So things are starting to turn around for him a bit, you know. He's he's doing up the car, he's not potentially gonna be making some money as well. It's all good, it's all good. But he does seem like he's under a spell.
Under a spell.
Cut to the library.
Um we've got Dennis and a couple of the other boys all daring themselves to talk to Lee, the new girl, the hot new girl. One of them makes a joke about a boner under the table and um they're talking ab so he goes over and manages to go over and sit with Lee and he says to her um do you like dancing? Do you wanna come dancing with me?
And she says no. He says well why not 'cause I've already got a date. Dun dun dun. We later find out it's a date with Arnie. How did this happen, what? Arnie the Virgin. Later on he Dennis arrives at Arnie's house and catches him arguing with his parents and this time he's arguing back. So Dennis is starting to notice little changes in his best friend and uh he says to Dennis I'm really sorry I can't make our movie night tonight, I've I've gotta go off and do something.
And he goes off to work on Christine because he's obsessed. He storms off. Dennis and his mum are kind of left there together and um Dennis Dennis is um Arnie's mum says I'm really worried about him, he's obsessed with this car. Isn't there anything you can do? And Dennis says well I'm really worried about him too to be honest with you. I don't really see him anymore. He's he spends every night working on this car. So he's th
sure uh surely it obsessed with sucking cocks of of homeless people That. might that might be an obsession that I'm a bit concerned about. You know?
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm.
the car and says you know tell me about this car what's going on with it and he says ah yeah my brother killed himself in the car last year. He choked to death on carbon monoxide for him so we know that he killed himself in Christine and he says he did that because his wife died in the car as well. So did his baby daughter and it's like fucking hell so hang on a minute a c a b husband wife and daughter have all been choked in this car and now my friends got it Hmm. Hmm. I just
I'd say I wasn't degrading homeless people just then. I wasn't uh it's just I just it'd be the first people I jumped at who uh are those a random thing they do. I just wanted to say yeah, yeah. Just felt maybe it was m easier easier access, I'm not sure. I don't know. Uh so yeah, we find out then that there's been a few deaths within this car. We also know that there were a few deaths on the assembly line when it was created at the beginning of the movie, so definitely something evil about
this car. So that night Dennis sneaks into the workshop and he sees Christine and uh he looks at it and he's thinking wow, he's doing he's doing a pretty good job on it really.
I know. It's an honest fucking hobby. What's everybody's fucking problem with this? I don't understand.
But he tries to open the doors
and uh the radio comes on doesn't, it? You keep on knocking but you can't come in. Good it is.
uh song to come on, wasn't it, isn't it? Uh well it gives him an indication that something's not completely right with this car, uh and there's obviously he realising his friend and his mum, the two people that uh would uh the closest to him to see him frequently haven't, been seen him frequently, and he's really not realising like this car has become obsessive to him, but there's more to it, and this is kind of just clarified that to him.
that there's something s sinister and maybe supernatural at play.
Indeed. Well we cut to the fateful football game now. So um two big things happen at this football game, or three big, things happen at this football game.
It's a very weird thing, but i I think it must be 'cause it's from a novel. It is very weird, but we will get to it.
So the big three things that happen at this football game is that Dennis uh is is playing football. He's thinking about giving up football. He's uh he's not really into it. Um he first of all sees Arnie arrive with Christine and his date comes over to him, who is Lee, the girl the, new girl that Dennis kind of asked out on a date. And this bewilders him and he thinks I don't understand how is Arnie got the girl that I wanted. I normally get the girls. But he's not bitter about it. He's just really confused.
So that's the first thing that happens. The second thing that happens is whilst he's distracted he gets taken out in an absolutely murderous tackle which puts him in hospital for the next act of the movie. Um out of commission and he's got no way to interfere in Arnie or Arnie's life at this p for a few weeks probably while he's in hospital. Meaning Arnie can get up to all sorts. And the third thing that happens at this football game is
Buddy and his gang see him pull up in this amazing car and they're like, how has Cunningham got that car? And one of the gang says, I know where he keeps it at night. Mm-hmm. Yeah. It's a very weird thing here. W well for myself, the two main characters are not really into, like I said, a reminder recast, and at this point here it's a really weird thing. They're the only two f f friends uh friends of each other where obviously Arnie's
mind has become more of uh uh I'm a bit of a dick and a bit more selfish because he's you know 'cause i in a normal world you wouldn't do that to your mate.
This is the cocaine theory.
Um yeah yeah yeah yeah okay well you make it sound more interesting than the film is Um. and you like that whole thing so he c looks there then he's taken out and like he is the more likable one Dennis. is more likable than Arne then Dennis is just out of it and then like I said oh no and it's just with Arne now he's cool and I dunno I. wasn't digging it.
Well Arne thinks he's cool in the same way that uh someone who's in the depths of a cocaine binge thinks they're cool as well. Um you know he he's got this swagger, he believes his own hype, he's got the girl, he's got the car.
Should have just had a little thing at the beginning of this movie. This isn't and this is c actually for c about cocaine in the cars. Okay thanks, Or. called the car coke.
Edit? Which says it's cocaine rather than Christine.
I'm Dan Bone of the podcast on Haunted Hill. You're about to watch the nineteen eighty three Stephen King penned, John Carpenter directed Christine. Bear in mind that this is an allegory for cocaine.
I think call it cocaine so every time I say Christine say cocaine.
cocaine bear Christine. bear. So yeah. I'll I find in the film very odd points that things are happening, weird things. Do you know what I mean? It d feels very clunky in a subtle way restructuring, and what's going on im uh in uh in emotionally with the film. Do you know what I mean?
Yeah, I I the story and the idea is cool. Um uh I really like the idea and the stuff in this I do like, but I feel it's a really weird and I don't know if it's the mixture of obviously taking Steering King's work, putting it to Phil and John Compton to do it, but it that shouldn't really be a thing. You can always make a screenplay from a s p a book and you have to adapt it for the screen 'cause things have to be slightly different sometimes. Um so I don't know, it's a weird
thing, but I find the film like when he was taken out of it, I was just a bit like oh man, and then for a long period it like I haven't seen his I thought about it as I haven't seen that other dude, I kind of didn't mind him too much and now I'm kind of just stuck with this guy I don't really like and I'm having to watch it. But I like the ho but I like the haunted car.
Stephen King is cocaine and John Carpenter is pot. And then you get Christine.
Oh. I've been there Jesus. Wasn't very nice Everyone. everyone in the room laughing at me, me not knowing why and then realising oh, thanks for that. Mm 'kay Well. yeah, I mean that's as much as I'll say. It wasn't it wasn't like the time I smoked crack accidentally. We've al we've all been there Literally. passed the joint, thought it was a joint and then I was told it was crack and I was like oh, f fucking great. There you
listeners I. don't know if I've ever told that story in the ten years of podcasting, but one time I accidentally smoked crack. Crack in hell. We are terrible. And if you want to unsubscribe now or stop being a patron, we don't blame you. It's one there's not like we're crackheads now. It's not the crackheads on pointed ill That. would be a different podcast. Um so um yes, going back to the movie, aren't uh um Dennis is now in hospital for quite a long time. He's got
bad injuries. He's told he probably won't be able to play football again which is fine 'cause he wanted to quit football anyway. Dennis seems pretty cool about as a good friend should be. He's like so you're with Lee now then and he's like yeah yeah I uh you know she's my girl we kind of like each other and the car's looking good and I've got the girl, you know. And he'd just be really cryptic and not acting like Arnie. And then he kind of just leaves and Dennis is left in the on the hospital bed, help us, like well what the hell's going on like. I love my friend
I don't mind that he's got m the girl I liked, but he's just not acting like himself, it's weird Cut. to the drive-in movie theatre and it's hammering down with rain.
What are we watching? I did think this is a that must be so frustrating, but then as soon as you saw them they're they're getting in on hand jobs in the car um so you're not really watching the movie anyway, but for the people who go to watch a movie a h a drive-in please let us know uh listeners uh who have drive-ins have been to them frequented uh uh in your youth or do still. Um what happened when it was pouring with fucking rain or just wipe us on constantly? Yeah. I know I. can't really hear the movie that well I thought it would speak uh that you're
Yeah, I kn well you tune in on the radio station don't, they? You don't have a radio frequency.
Oh yeah yeah, 'cause generally it'd just uh there'd be a frequency you'd just tune in to.
Does that mean if you live close by you could tune in, just s listen to a film?
I've never I've never been to one.
My friend told me that um some of the people she knows who live close by sit on their roofs and they watch the movie and then at the roof of their house and then they can tune in and it's not always it's b but yeah they're tuned in on a little transistor radio.
What is that one People? sh people are shouting at a podcast now.
Yeah you're right, I can't remember what it is now. Um but yeah so yeah, at this time i is it like the c I don't think it's like the creeps, no? Is it mo ah yes it is monster squad yes, that's right. So yes you're right, people aren't paying attention to this movie. Two of the people that aren't paying attention are Arnie and Lee, and Arnie is getting a little bit too rapey. He's got his hands all over Lee and she thinks he's moving a bit too fast and
this is the cocaine slash Christine in him. I he's acting really boisterously. So she runs away from him, he catches up with her and says like what c I'm sorry I'm sorry I just thought you know that's where we're tonight was going. And she says no come, on I'm just you you're more obsessed with that car than you are me. Uh few weeks. It's it's like calm down lady. But obsessed with the car yeah, we've been together just a small bit like
I'm not gonna become obsessed by you, just chill out, can't care about it.
And so it makes a l almost like you shouldn't be jealous of another girl. Well he gets they go back in the car and he gets out to fix I think a windscreen wiper that jams on Christine, but this is all Christine's plan because whilst he's outside he doesn't realise that Lee starts choking inside the car, which is how Christine has killed people in the past, they just start choking in the car and then it locks all the window all the doors. She's trying to get out finally manages to climb out the door, a
guy comes over, it gives her the Heimlich manoeuvre um and he drives her home.
Hey you, get your damn hands off her. That's about to the future reference point then.
Yeah they, argue at the door um she b she blames the car.
Yeah, it looks amazing.
So nicely and these are the little bits of the movie I go oh that looks so nice, but it's mainly shots.
Is it?
So go on.
And the song comes on um, I love you like I do. Why do I love you like I do? And he's like oh yeah you're back you're back.
We're assuming it's a soul somehow just a a p a p appeared in the car. Um but we also know it's insecure as well. It needs reassurance.
It's uh okay yeah, so it this this does explain cocaine, does explain a lot of this stuff now Dan.
It doesn't make me like the movie anymore though.
I d I don't know. No not really. No.
It was a very good indication of us of uh s obviously for us to uh show that he has a connection with the car and they both like are both connected to each other and it's fairly like mutual.
Uh just as he's going uh uh uh just as he drives the car and uh uh uh like he drives round to the right it's fairly big double doorway for probably large vehicles. Uh all the gangs the thirty five year old gang members all go in and go round to left because they've got nothing better to do to go in and br smash a car up which I suppose for them is kind of fun it's, violence and their bang bashing things, but again you're too old. Go do something else.
Yeah, they sneak in and they've got sledgehammers. Uh. Do you know what I mean? It's like go do other things for for my other things to do. Oh. I I was thinking I wouldn't of mine smashing it up. Just just to smash it up no, no, nothing bad about the car or anything. I'm not really into the ninety fifties cars. Well
more 70s colours. But um like American ones. But smash it up woulda been fun as fuck.
Yeah. Well they slash it smash it up, they slash the seats as well. And all the oh yeah. Go wild guys. I don't think that's John Cobb today. Um and the radio comes on, but one of them s smashes the radio as well and, yeah, we know that they've done some damage here. They all ex like look at like excited ten-year-olds at a birthday party.
with a pinata. But it's not a pinata, it's a car. In the morning Arne says silly look, I'm not gonna get Christine today, but I do need to pop in to get my wallet. I left it ins inside the glove box. Let me just go in, get my wallet, and then we'll go on a lovely date. And it'll just be me and you today, I promise. So she says alright, go on then, let's go. And as they as they approach the car inside the uh the coverage sort of shed where it is, it is
destroyed. Every window, every mirror is broken, the tyres are slashed, the seats are slashed. We even find out that one of them took a big shit on the dashboard, don't we Gav? How do you I knew you'd wanna talk about this. Oh come on, the the the f the car up there, you've got the window at an angle, we're looking at like what, forty five degree angle coming away. How do you squeeze your ass in there to get a dookie on that dash? Well there's
two ways of doing it, in my opinion. One of them is you either stand on the one of the I've been there. One of them is I think one of them is you either stand on the driver's seat and put your bum over the um steering wheel. Or you can stand on the passenger's seat and put your just th you need to lean back a bit. Or what they probably did was 'cause they smashed the windscreen, stand on the the
And just shit through the windscreen onto the dashboard. Yeah. I'm thinking it's more wrong It's. more of a flat windscreen, isn't it? It goes more upwards doesn't, it? More like ninety degrees. I'm thinking of English cars which are really yeah, thirty forty, forty five degree angle. Alright, you might be able to get your arse up there. I was wondering. Alright, you might be able to get your arse up there.
Do a big shit on the dashboards. It it it made me think think about it for a little while in the film. I'm g I'm glad I'm really glad.
Um he is obviously devastated and when Lee comes over and says oh my God, he says don't touch me and don't you touch her Leave. us.
Yeah.
What?
They they say to him look what we'll do is 'cause you're so upset we'll pay we'll buy him another car. And he says uh fuck you He. actually says fuck you. I'll fix her and I'll show you all. His dad f follows him out and says don't you talk to your mother like that. And he grabs his dad around the throne. And yeah, he does he does go one of 'em even shit in the car mum. And that and then my mind's not going again How. did you do that?
Well he throttles his dad and says then he gives him a little j fake slap on the face and says yeah that's what I thought big man, back off leave, me alone. And you're thinking Jesus man, the cocaine slash Christine Saul and this guy, he's really now he's having to go at his parents now, it's crazy it's crazy. I did also look at the time and think oh my God it's only half way through, this is your midpoint turn. I was like oh my God there's another fifty minutes still. But this is see now this
the part of the movie I like? It's hunting them down. It's hmm.
So he goes back to see Christine at night and he sort of talking to her like, I'm so sorry about what they've done to you. We'll we'll get through this together. And one of the tyres seems to move a bit and he sort of thinks, that's strange. And then he he sort of goes with it 'cause he's already under the spell and he knows that there's something happening here. So he just stands in front of it and he says to Christine, okay show, me.
and she just repairs herself. And it is a brilliant effect, isn't it?
Yeah, it's fantastic. Obviously refers photography uh p uh I think it's hydraulics pushing the car.
Yeah you, yeah you, would be able to do stuff with like uh suction pads and stuff. So I expect I then you look into a show then.
But all all the tyres basically ref re-inflate and and um I've written this and I hope it makes sense. It's like Christine is c fully revealing herself to v properly. And it's like a striptease, but in reverse 'cause it's putting itself back together rather than stripping itself down. Does that make sense? So it's kind of like it's doing a striptease for him, but in reverse. And he's just watching in all like I knew there was something magical about this. I knew it.
see see I think this movie starts off with a scene where the car a straight away the car has been fucking maybe driving itself with no person in it, kills someone and then uh for whatever reason maybe it gets smashed up or something, then he finds the car discovers it, gets in the car, starts doing it up and uh pricks his finger on it, ah shit or something, do you know what I mean, that sort of thing, and then all of a sudden there's this bonding happens and then it becomes cool and we could have cut out so much movie then like the buddies get pissed off that he takes the
when it was a buddy's girlfriend, right, uh that say smash up his car, it then turns into a revenge for the for the rest of the movie. That woulda worked for me.
Yeah maybe,
But that woulda that woulda worked for the movie of me, cut out most of that first half.
Yep. Looks great Looks. really good.
Later on we see one of the gang guys just walking along on his own, and he hears a radio playing, and he thinks is that Cunningham in his car? He says Cunningham is that you? Are you mad? Uh you're not mad at you. It's like oh my God, you smashed this guy's car up and shot on his dashboard. Of course he's gonna froth He's. gotta be a little bit mith to the i uh I just slashed the tires, I didn't shit.
peeping, ha puto.
Um but the radio comes on and he can't see and we as an audience member don't know if Arnie's even in there because you can't really see. So we this could well be Christine acting on her own. She moves very slowly. This is the b the shots you like with the P_O_V_ of the car man. And all of a sudden speeds up, sort of runs him off the road a bit. He he dives over the the sort of middle part of the the that separates the lanes
And then it turns round, chases him over a fence into an alleyway and it's a dead end.
This is great. So you got bird's eye view of the alleyway and we can see uh uh oh oh this guy's standing there and this car can't get in 'cause it's not wide enough. So what does it do Dan?
Well, again you get the sense that this is i uh uh like an animal, it pushes its way or a bear, you know, if you're trapped in in a little hole with a bear. We've seen this where like a T_ rex can start in the tube and whap its ass. No no.
Yeah and, it squishes this guy dead.
And I'm loving the movie here. I'm like this is fucking great. Why is the rest of the movie not like this?
We cut to Dean in uh Dennis in the hospital and Arnie wakes him up with bears. Again he's not acting himself. He's acting all hokey and confident. And he says th th th I was quite happy. It was like great, we're back to this guy again. He's slightly more like born that guy.
He says, did you hear what happened to uh that that guy that bu yeah, he's like let's drink this drink to him. Another piece of shit wiped off the face of the earth. And Dennis is like whoa whoa whoa, this is a guy that died man, like calm down a bit. And um he says oh by the way Christine's up and running again and it's all good. And then he says wow, that's fast work. Um you know something? I bet it was Buddy and his buddies that did that to you. And he says yeah. He says what if they do it again?
And Arnie says they won't.
And then he just leaves.
Mm-hmm.
He's looking all cool now, James Dean star. Back at the school Arne Arnie gets into Christine. That's what I was gonna say. Yeah. Well the college he Oh is it the hospital I thought it was for him. Oh.
the school. So it it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter.
Yeah.
He's he's you know he's on his radar now, this kid is. And and there's this guy's g been killed. Um um and he's not implying, but he's just sort of saying like you know y y you guys were not like friends. So where were you what are you doing?
He also says it's never said. But I the reason he asks about the colour red is because I I'm sure that they probably find red scratches all up the alleyway and probably on the body of the guy as well.
Well uh well the first thing you like they're gonna ask uh kids at school did he have any enemies or was there any altercations. And it and they'd just seen these altercations going on with these this these two and like the gang. But I presume they probably bullied most people to be honest with you. I was bet he's got loads of people when I fucking hurt him. Not kill him, but.
Well the there's a really good exchange here where Harry Dean Stanton is sort of saying to him I heard they totaled your car. I mean you put it back together pretty fast and you've done a great job. I can't even see where you've done the work. Sh can you show me? And he says yeah there's a little bit here and a little bit here. But uh you know I've done a good job. He says I heard that they smashed it to pieces. I heard one of them took a shit on the dashboard. And he says and he says yep, well how did you get rid of that? He said shit shit cleans up.
He he he he gets a bit cheeky and says it's not uh you know get off my back it's not uh against the Lord Fixer's car, which it isn't. Um but at this point here the whole time through this movie I said I haven't liked the characters, this should be recast. At this point here when he's a bit cheeky with a p detective back and forwards it's a good bit of John Carp to play here in directing. And he comes across the character I'm not too p he's I yeah okay, as a bad guy.
A kind of m at this point here, just this point where he's cheeky with a detective, it's not bad acting, I don't mind it. So I almost feel like I'd almost feel like this if he had to have him, to have him more like this from the get-go almost. But not be the good guy though, that's the thing.
After his comment about shit cleans up, the the detective says to him did you hear about the boy then that was killed? Um we uh found him cut in half.
He was crushed and cut in half. And he says oh well I suppose you have to do what you do with shit and shovel that up too. And he says you're a bit cheeky. And uh he sort of revs his car and he says I've got my eye on you, like he said. Uh he's he's on his he's on his radar. And he just says get off my back and drives off.
What is going on with these guys? Why are they buying red fucking wine?
What are they doing? He's drive walking around like he's at a grocery his flip knife, thirty five year old taking people's lunches buying red wine. I I'm b I am quite surprised when they're s producing pre-producing the film, go okay these are the characters, let's get their arc, okay. Let's cast this guy 'cause he looks like he's thirty five, and they drink red wine. No.
Just before that scene where they're buying the the booze. Just before just before that scene Arnie does call on the phone, he calls Lee, and he says um I need to see you. And she says well I don't really know if I wanna see you anymore. And out the blue he just goes well fuck you you bitch I don't wanna see you and then he hangs up on her. And he can't really understand why he's just done that. Exactly.
Okay, it it's more interesting when you said that.
Are the gang hang on let's, go back to this quickly. Are the gang they've bought this bottle of red wine, are they gonna then go sit down somewhere? It's it's a wine shop and they've got a what bottle of wine. Are they then opening up and just pouring each other a glass? Do you want some more Chianti? The first time I ever drank red wine went to party. Didn't know that it's a good I was drinking red wine out the bottle. And someone said to me, I've never ever seen that before and I got
fucked. Don't drink don't drink any more. So.
Well they're driving around in the car and they realise that the car behind them has got the headlights on really bright. And they're getting pissed off with this guy. He seems to be following them for a while. And they sort of f just flip 'em flip 'em off and uh then they stop the car and they shut up.
That was very quickly they they're going on and they go at the car, the exterior shots, the car goes around and goes really fast. So you cut to those guys and they're like yeah, just move a little bit, move a little bit left, little bit right, that's that. Come on, give us a bit more.
Uh so they they stop their car quickly, which makes the car behind them stop. And then they reverse at the car. And then they drive off. But the car then then chases them.
So they drive really really fast to get away and they pull into a gas station 'cause they're gonna pick up their buddy that works at this gas station as well. So he can come and drink some Merlot with them, you know 'cause it's Merlot night for the boys. Um but Christine he gets in and he goes some asshole's chasing me in I. hope he doesn't come in here 'cause I'm gonna have to fuck him up. Well sadly uh Christine does come in she, runs over the Ghostbusters guy um then uh crashes
a car, so gas so petrol or gas starts leaking everywhere. Then a fire starts which causes a big explosion. This moment where Christine is on fire. Wow. I put this up there with that that m that moment where Jason is still on top of the sideways camper van when it's on fire and he's just stood there. This is up there with that. This looked incredible. Uh so again like wow this is so good. I'm gutted it's in this film
they they why can they not just cut this film down and just show have more of this This? is so good, you know.
It's looks so good.
And it just chases him, runs him over while he's on a flame, while he's in flames a car. It looks so good.
Yeah, it's just led there in the middle of the road and it goes over it. Fucking so rad. And I don't really like this movie, but I'm saying these scenes are fucking incredible.
Indeed.
Knocking one out.
He's probably found a copy of Playboy.
Oh yeah. That that was my impression of him, not me saying.
Yeah. Just get another cigar here. But he sees the doors open to the garage and he thinks oh, who's this coming into slate and Christine drives herself in absolutely burnt to a crisp and he thinks what the fuck is
going on here? Uh so he sneaks over, he gets his gun, and he sneaks over to the car, he opens the door and there's no-one in there, Gav. So he gets in and he's sort of f looking around at this completely to the burnt car, then the radio comes on, the door slams. Yeah. I don't know why. He sits in and then the chair moves forward and s he gets squashed between
It's cr it's crushed in his face exactly where the poo was on the dash. There might be have been a little speck left. Uh eat shit darn now. Um. We didn't see that. No, we didn't see it sort of shake the poo off, did we?
Sucked it back in and find out the exhaust. Uh the morning Arnie is fucked in the morning because he gets there in the morning and the car is swarming with detectives including Harry Dean Stanton. But it says to him your boss was shot Uh. yeah, your boss shot himself in the car. What? Which which does make him n not look that guilty 'cause he ain't just turned up. So it's kind of at least it makes him not look completely like the one.
says also, two other people turned up dead last uh three other people turned up dead last night as well, buddy and two of his cronies. Where were you last night? He's like, I was um uh home. He's like y y y yeah. He says I was do uh he says something about I was unloading boxes and he says well, have you got the receipts? And he says no, I don't Um. well actually this time he does have a receipt to prove what he was doing. But basically there's now four deaths linked to to Arnie and he
hasn't really got an awful a very good alibi. Um then we we see Lee phoning Dean uh Dennis sorry, and says look I need you I want to come over and talk to you about Arnie in the car. And he's like yeah come, on over. Yep. So she comes on over and she says look I th this is a Christmas scene there 'cause there's a little Christmas tree in the background and she says look I'm afraid for Arnie, you know, I'm I'm I'm worried that he'll hurt me, he'll hurt
her himself and Dennis says well look come here and he hugs her and he doesn't make a move on her, he he could have done it in another film he would have done, but he doesn't and he just said he d yeah so they hug they hug and she says to Dennis it's the car, I truly believe that it's the car and Dennis actually says you know what I, think it is. So he says I tell you what though, I'm going to Arnie's for New Year's Eve tomorrow night, it's a tradition, I always go
it'll be me his, mum and dad and him, and we do it every year. I'll go there, I'll get him on his own and I'll talk to him about this co-care this car. Um so later on Christine arrives with Denni with Arnie driving and he picks up Dennis.
Yeah you got crutches, aha you're working them really well. He's re being all mean and horrible to his friend, the tables have turned a bit you know. Um and Lee is hiding behind a tree watching this unfold and she's oh god I hope he can talk to him.
They drive off and they drink beers as they're driving and he says to Dennis will you toast to me it's gonna be nineteen seventy nine, let's toast that nineteen seventy nine's the year that all the shidders of the world get wiped off the face of the planet. And he's like I'm not gonna toast to people dying Arnie, this this is not right.
And he says watch this. And Arnie takes his hands off the steering wheel and the car sort of carries on driving he says that's perfect alignment. These old cars they've got perfect w wheel alignment, they just drive in a straight line. Arnie starts getting scared and uh he says you don't have to worry about anything Arnie, as long as you stick with me you'll be alright. As long as you stick with me basically says threatens him but not threatens him.
And Dennis actually has tears in his eyes and that's why I love the characters in this 'cause Dennis has got tears in his eyes at this point so he's really scared he's, just been threatened. And Dennis says to Arnie look we care about you.
And uh he's talking about you know we're worried about you we'll just do want the best for you. And Arnie thinks he's talking about him and Christine and Dennis is like no no no I'm talking about me and Lee.
Not you in the car, you and Lee.
And he says look what me and Christine have got is love beautiful, unstoppable love and with me and Christine as a team we can do anything. Watch this. And he drives crazy all over the place and um Dennis gets out the car and that's the end of that really and Dennis is it's been confirmed Arnie is fucking mental and this car is making him act mental. So the next day he scratches a message on the hood of the car doesn't, he Gav?
And the film again now is is kind of gone slowed down. I know it was getting way out the I know you can't always be up and stuff but, it was so great meeting going and it's kind of just gone back down to oh it's these guys again and they're dynamic of their relationship. Yeah.
well well Dennis wants to get his attention so he scratches the words Darnelles tonight on the hood of Christine. Basically he's gonna go there with Lee, they break in ahead of um Arnie and and Christine and they're gonna get a bulldozer and fight yes fight Christine the haunted car with a bulldozer. Um the movie kind of does sort of become a m a little muddled in my opinion now for the last fifteen minutes.
There's there's a coll there's a clear goal, but it's like this movie and there's there's a clear goal, but it's just very muddled way of doing it.
This is the pot version of the co the um cocaine now, because the guy that's on the pot, the John Carpenter, is now getting a little bit rambly, and he's been talking about the same thing over and over again. It's just J_C_B_ The. J_C_B_'s gonna fight the car, whereas before it was like.
really straightforward. We can know what's gonna happen and and it just yeah it it it you're right here.
But essentially what happens is there's a bit of a scrap between Dennis driving the J_C_B_. Lee gets injured. Um the c there's an amazing shot where Christine's damaged by crashing into a wall and it looks like she's got teeth, the way that the bonnet is all smashed and jagged. It looks like she's got a mouth with teeth, which is awesome. Dennis uses the J_C_B_ firstly but to protect Lee, then to fight and then ultimately crush Christine underneath the weight. She keeps preparing herself.
Right before their eyes um Arnie jumps out of the windscreen, he's got glass in his stomach and he actually dies. So dar Ar Arnie gets killed, you'll be pleased Gav. N he didn't like him very much, he's dead. Which is again something you don't see very often, it's normally a redeeming. Yeah, aga so this is really odd now. So then we got this t uh the he the hero's then is gonna be that guy and that girl. But he he was earlier taken out of it for such a long time while the other one was then there. It's such a w weird movie, it really is.
While they're crushing Christine and she's trying to regenerate, but she can't, the radio's playing rock and roll is here to stay rock and roll and it's tr basically trying to say she's like I'm here to stay I'm here to stay and she tries to repair but she can't and they end up crushing Christine into a cube of metal. And just like the weird detective that turns up at the end of Pride of Chucky, Harry Dean Stanton turns up and goes well no one's ever gonna believe this story but you two are heroes
anyway. But it's like y yeah okay this haunted car killed your buddy and a bunch of other guys, but we're all gonna believe it and that's fine. Um and then they hear some fifties music playing, but it's just a guy with a radio um and then they say I hate rock and roll, and we have a close-up of the c on the cube of scrap metal and one of the bits of metal just gives a little wiggle. Little wiggle like that. And that that's the end.
it I think this needs someone to go over this movie and give it another edit. Sorry. I know you love it. Yeah. 'Cause I I like I like your analogy of cocaine though, that kind of helped helped the with the film, but it just it needs a needs a proper edit.
In the last couple of years, like I said, it's floated around close to and sometimes is in my top three Carpenter movies. It it's up there, you know, and in a couple of years it'll be back down into the top ten probably. That's why I love John Carpenter 'cause I love all of his films. But but then you'd only seen it once before, you know. Um and then that's just the way it goes sometimes.
Then the the couple of shots of the car, the car on fire chasing the guy down's fucking incredible. So f don't know.
Yeah I'm, wondering it would be nice to know the background a bit was after
The. Shining was just before this assuming. Right so, at this point he's gonna be a little bit more protective about his what comes out and probably when he these people were approaching the studios he's like yeah but, in my scripts I want more of like a my say in more of my scripting it or whatever his terms are. I assume that that's what he did a bit more.
Did um Carpenter 'cause there are friends, you know, they were in that circle. Um so he trusted him and the Carpenter felt he he owed it to him, which is probably why the movie runs a bit too long. I think yeah I, think there's a bit of bow bow and down to him a little bit. Uh uh and uh uh obviously there's a bad experience or unpleasant experience of how he'd deemed the Shining Kubrick, Shining.
And. funny enough, Gav, um one of the bits of trivia is that it was shot in the same neighbourhood that Halloween was shot in s which is why you you you got that vibe, you know. So let's persume assume he's in the in the haze of cocaine as well. Um 'cause then afters I guess he goes and makes his own maxima overdrive, where he thinks like fucking he is a shit and it's like no, you've just made shit Um. yeah, I I just feel like this movie needs to have
uh a re-look, a little bit of a polish.
Fair enough, fair enough Um. Kevin. I I I'm I'm uh sorry, I'm gonna give it a thumbs down and not recommend it. Oh god, sorry.
Kevin Bacon um was gonna play the main in this, the lead at then S_ in this, but ended up going to make Footloose instead.
I would have really really preferred Kevin Bacon.
Fair enough. You know what my thoughts on Kevin Bacon are I? love a bacon sandwich. But look, I give it a thumbs up. Obviously I recommend it. I love it. That's why I chose it. I do love all of Carpenter's films, even Vampires and Ghosts of Mars. I've got time for anything he does because I love his his his work. But there we go. That was Christine. Now it's time for a bit of World of the Strange and Bill Murray is.
He he turned up while we were recording, by the way, just the the last segment.
No.
He has got a fong in his mouth and a bottle of whisky. So that must be near the uh dance club he went to.
Oh yeah, it's the crystal one. Have you ever had some?
Hmm.
Hi, welcome back to World of the Strange.
Oh, it's a strange world. Oh, it's a strange world. It's a strange world. We're here. Thank you Bill. Taking time out of uh your uh Ghostbusters Frozen Empire promotional tour in strip clubs by the
isn't, it Um. um it's incredible that studios allow in his contract team to to participate in a s uh hi um with the podcast on Horned Hill. Almost didn't have a podcast, huh?
He's been doing this for ten years though. He's you know he's contractually obliged to
Um. so I've got a list we've just talked about Christine, a car with a mind of its own, a haunted car, and I've got a list of spooky cars and vehicles to go through with your hearth. These are all these are all Real Life tales as well. So I'll jump s jump straight in. The first one is called the jumping car of Cape Town. Yeah, South Africa, yeah. Shh. Yeah, South Africa is not just a it's not just a g a cool car of suspension.
No, no. At one quiet night in Cape Town, South Africa in two thousand and four, a family was asleep after hosting a dinner party for some friends. They awoke in the middle of the night to the sound of a car engine. They thought their Renault Megane, not a call car, was being stolen. The family rushed out onto the driveway. There was no one there, but something much more intimidating was happening. The car was jumping off the ground up and down and up
and down there was no one inside it and then the engine switched off. They checked the vehicle and expected it couldn't find any keys in the ignition, the hand brake was still on, they called the police. The police arrived and thought this is probably a joke, isn't it. But the same thing happened when the police arrived, the car's engine switched on and off and it jumped up and down several times off the ground. Nine people including two police officers witnessed the car start on its own and jump off the
But Renno, who issued a statement, said that they're certain it was a faulty starter motor.
That would probably make sense.
But wha wha what are we saying though Uh? wh when was this?
Okay. Before the advent of the uh smartphone in two thousand and ten with the with the video in your book it. Um video record uh um don't know. Don't know. I can't I can't I don't know. Maybe it's a ghost card, there's lots of jump wh why is the ghost card jumping though? What is this is what when people have these ghost experiences I'm always just like but why is the ghost just gonna push that cup for a bit? Why the fuck's it care? Why the fuck is it going to open the cupboard
Why it don't give a shit. Why is it doing it if you don't care? Think it'd be a bigger picture here. Is it trying to communicate with you? We've just got a really fucking sad boring ghost. Maybe it was a house of pain fan, and it like jumper ranked. If we're getting back to the car then maybe.
Let's just go with that. It would have been a great promo for house of pain though. Mm-hmm. Sorry say, again. Okay. Mm-hmm. This is fascinating.
So what yeah, interesting, is that did that car go to a museum? What happened to it?
Is it a car? In another car? In a car in a car?
Really I thought they would have f taken it out of service and put that as a museum piece.
Imagine the first person that's next in there right, we're gonna get in the car. What car have I got today? Is it picking me up? Oh it's a J_F_K_ one. Oh really? Where you where you where do I sit? Uh where is sh where are we shot actually? You gotta sit there. Who where is my children sit? Oh they're next to you, but uh it's alright there's no blood there, we've gotta clean up. Why do I take the car out of service you cheap cums?
Well visitors to the museum to visit the car have reported several spooky happenings.
People report most people report a feeling of a supernatural presence around the car. Um almost a force pushing them away from the car. People have said they've seen a grey man standing near the car who vanishes when they look the other way. Um and some skeptics have labelled the grey man as a trick of the light 'cause of the positioning of the windows in the museum.
But sightings of him increase every November around the anniversary of the shooting. No we, don't. This is just a it's just a little spooky tell for you.
Yeah I'm, not r people wouldn't be happy about it. They must have had another limousine they could have got.
It's the president.
Is that why yeah, why c can I have another limo? Why? 'Cause the far last guy who did the job I'm doing was shot in the head there.
Watch it.
Just another car, anything.
Let's p let's move on to the next story. This one is President Lincoln's funeral ghost train What's. up with all the frozen cars? Are we gonna have one day a President Trump spooky helicopter? What when he tripped up and fell down the steps? Or was that Biden? They think they both did it actually. Uh okay so imagine this. You're driving down the highway in New York at night, and you notice a cloud of thick black swag fog swirling around beside you.
A ghostly train emerges from the frog and overtakes you. It doesn't make any noise, and inside you can see skeletons, soldiers in uniforms, but there's skeletons and there's a coffin in there. Then the train disappears into the distance. But there's no railway tracks 'cause you're on the road. There's no sign of the train. And when you finish your journey and you pull up home, the clock's changed and you've lost six minutes.
You've just seen President Abraham Lincoln's funeral possession a hundred and fifty years after he was assassinated.
What? At one point I thought he said th frogs overtook you.
Oh.
I was wondering why frogs are involved It. v completely threw me off course on this.
But it's just a train going. Yeah yeah, but yeah, it's not like a possession of people walking through the road.
But like like have the party. Oh sorry I, was just slicking out. Um why?
Well but why would these ghosts be doing this? Why would they all when they died, like I'm gonna be a ghost probably somewhere, or I'm just gonna my soul's gonna be chilled. No, I'm a ghost back on a train from when I was at a f a funeral. Like what? Why am I here as a spirit? It's a weird place to be. Did they all die in a massive car crash or in the train crash? Why wouldn't they all be there then?
Oh I'm not I I'm not expecting you to give me answer to these Dan. I'm gonna be throwing all sorts at you.
Alright. I'll watch the next files the other day of Brad the Riffen. Okay.
No presents.
Okay.
Can you get on it?
Yeah?
Mm-hmm.
So if you see this train pull up, and it's the last train, this isn't your train, do not get on it 'cause you won't ever get home, you'll never get anywhere.
Apparently there is a subway station of the dead called Kimlinge.
And those who end up there can lose weeks or years of their life before they c emerge back into our world if they're lucky. Some s s waiting for the next train.
For years.
What did G_G_?
You bef fuck yeah get, on it.
They said years. I was thinking you're looking at five or six uh something.
If you've gone out for two years.
I got the last train. And then I was in limbo. And I've not aged.
Is that her name is it?
I was in limbo That's. who is this limbo?
That's quite a good joke though.
So let's talk about Franz Ferdinand's limousine.
Franz Ferdinand's had bad luck linked to the limousine, which started on the fateful day that he was assassinated, thus sparking the first world war.
Mm-hmm.
There's a little back story there for you. Uh having narrowly avoided death earlier in the day, Ferdinand's limousine inexplicably stalled outside the cafe. Prince yes Uh. and that's where um the artist Duke and his wife were both shot dead And. over the next twelve years thirteen deaths have been allegedly caused by this haunted car Uh. an Austrian general that drove it ended up um in an asylum.
For the insane, not long after Two. peasants and a German military officer were killed in a crash involving the car. A Swiss racing driver drove the car in a race and rolled the car Uh. it didn't die. And a Romanian owner on his way to a wedding lost control of the vehicle which killed himself and five other people in the car. Six people died in that one.
The car is now on display at the War History Museum in Vienna, where it sit where it sits without a single scratch on it.
Despite all of the incidents that have happened to it over the years, it never apparently had a single scratch Apparently. it's protected by a ghostly force. Uh so uh one of the guys that drove it ended up in an insane asylum. So he didn't die. Two peasants and a German ima German military officer were killed in a crash involving the car. Uh but the car wasn't scratched. A
Swiss racing driver rolled the car, joined a race and a a Romanian guy on the way to a wedding was driving the car and lost control of it killing himself and five other people. I I'm calling bullshit it didn't have a scratch on it. Is this like a NINI false analysis where he says I've had the same brush for ten years, I've changed the h the handle five times, and I've changed the base of the brush six times. Yeah. And how could it be the same brush? What do you mean It? is the same brush Very. funny.
You're calling bullshit on this one. Fair enough. Does s yeah. Yeah, come on.
Cars back then were made of wood and paper. Do you know what I mean They? were like I couldn't yeah.
A tellurium.
Now the ones who had the wooden panel in on the sides, they're like little trucks almost at the back. They're like hey, but it's but the front yeah, and it's all wooden paddles. Oh my God they're still around. It's got wood instead of metal.
Well let's move on to Bonnie and Clyde.
Bonnie and Clyde in their famous car. Two of the most infamous villains of the twentieth century they, committed a string of robberies, murders and kidnappings in the thirties, and continued to strike fear into people's hearts nearly eighty years later, on the night of the May th the twenty third, nineteen thirty four, police ambushed them in their nineteen thirty two Maude-Fordlais Maude sorry, Maude, Ford model eighteen in Louisiana, and delivered Swiss justice. They were killed with over a
bullets. Um so they just emptied a hundred bullets into the car and killed them instantly. But that that wasn't the end for these two. The the same car now sits in whiskey Pete's casino in Nevada. You can go and there's a picture of it Still. got all the bullet holes in it. Somebody bought somebody bought it and put it in whiskey Pete's casino in Nevada. Um so Siri seeing such an eerie sight would be enough for a place on this list, but for
many visitors, they purported an uneasy sense of not feeling alone when they go and take photos of it. Photos of the car sometimes show mysterious objects or people in them.
Could these be the ghosts of Bonnie and Clyde?
Yeah, it's one of those things there's a couple of uh places in London where the bullet holes you can see uh in the shell casing holes and where there's been explosion and all shit from the wall, when you see the holes and it's just quite sketchy, you know, the bullet holes and things like that, it's like wow. So looking at that car, 'cause they they fucking just let loose on those two and they just ploughed took them down and was like no no, they're coming back for you guys, fuck you. And yeah.
W when I wa when I was in Budapest and when I was in Berlin um they've kept all the buttholes in the buildings uh, but Budapest had a quite a lot of stuff go on I, think Prague as well when I was there. But I remember
Mm-hmm. Yeah.
And and and what it can do to a brick, and you think Jesus, that going into me, fuck it now. Well Gav, let's bring it on home to London, the number seven London phantom bus, the phantom bus.
Fuck it up.
Yes, I've heard very very good things about it.
really good. So uh if you liked the Guy Ritchie episode last time uh well uh one movie we did, Lockstalk and you liked Guy Ritchie and you've not seen it, do recommend on Netflix.
The phantom the phantom bus. So the sight of a red London bus obviously is very familiar and very comforting to a lot of English drivers, but not when you're headed towards a head-on collision for one.
For one unfortunate driver in nineteen thirty four the sighting of the phantom bus proved fatal and his car exploded into flames when he swerved into a wall without any rhyme or reason. Several witnesses came forward during the investigation and said that they saw a ghostly vehicle heading towards him. And between nineteen thirties and nineteen ninety a lot of Londoners have come forward. It doesn't say how many. A lot of Londoners have come forward and said that they've
seen a number seven ghost bus with no one driving it in the centre of the road and they've had to swerve around it. Some of them have even crashed to avoid it. It always appears around one fifteen A_M_ in the morning, a time that no buses should have been on the roads.
The ghost bus, the phantom bus, the number seven bus, Gav. Have you ever seen it? You're in London a lot. Let's go for a drive right about quarter past one in the morning, see what happens. I didn't see any ghost buses. Ghost buses. Let's move on to James Dean. He had a Porsche five hundred
Spider, which he called the little bastard. That's what he named his car. Alec Guinness said to him, said James de he said, hey my, dear boy James Dean, I can't do an impression of Alec Guinness, you'll be dead within a week if you get into that thing Well. thanks for that Alec Guinness, fucking hell. Seven days later, James Dean and his mechanic plied into the back of a car and died. So Alec Guinness used the force there, I think. I think, fuck you
Um not only was Alex comment scarily uh fortuos uh fortune telling sorry, but but James Dean and his mechanic also were the only victims of Little Bastard as it was named Uh. George Barris, a famous Hollywood car customiser sold the engine and other parts to um William Eisrich and Dr McHenry Uh. Dr. McHenry was killed and ma uh Eisrich injured in a in the same race that they were both taking part
Yeah I know.
How? What the fuck?
Um says here the two things which make the Little Bastard stand out on this list. Uh while it was on display in California in uh as an illustration of disastrous consequences of countless driving, the garage it was in burned down to the ground. Everything was destroyed except for the car itself which came out the fire without even a scratch on it. And then in nineteen sixty five years after James Dean's death, the Little Bastard disappeared off the back of a truck without an engine and to this day it's never been
really? Mm-hmm. I imagine that. Uh we're bringing James Dean's car into the school today and all these little kids are like yay we like those films he was in. It's fallen out and landed on them Little. bastard. No. Probably not Um. oh yeah the, last one is the black vulgar not, a vulva or
Uh so let let's go here. Um evil is the only way to describe this terrifying Russian limousine, which frightens people to the point they believe that Satan himself drives it.
Satan himself drives the car.
That's. amazing. I want them I want them on the bonnet out of the front, like your old-school d uh Texas billionaire drives around. Yeah. Yeah. Um there were disappearances whenever the car appeared. Children would be taken and never seen again. I don't know if that's the car doing it. You know. Yeah, maybe that. Uh and anyone who tried to intervene was dead within twenty four hours. The car appi would appear out of nowhere in the
sixties and seventies with people I think there's just someone going around in the sixties and seventies kidnapping children, Gavin. Yeah. Um th it says here this story would be the easiest to dismiss as potential scaremonger f in Russia Uh. potential scaremonger by the Soviet government to install further terror. But in Ukraine in the sixties, reports tell of two girls being approached by this car and then were sucked inside it like
a vacuum cleaner. How do we have uh wha what entry did they sucked into? Uh the exhaust may be rid of a a witness instead of dropping dead like the other the others managed to open the door and get out.
Okay. I don't believe this witness Uh. the front of the car apparently was completely empty, no one was driving it, and there was a b it might be the car. The truth about the car which happened to be w which and what happened to the missing children may never be known. That was a bit of a crap one. Just a pedo and a black car driving around. But there we go. Some good ones on there. Some good imagery. I think
James Dean one is pretty spooky. And I I I think I want a different limo instead of the J_F_K_s. If you ever become president, I promise you you can have any kind you want, Gav. S yeah, why b give be the one the last dude that did this job s killed in. I know, sassade. Where am I sitting? Same spot. Oh. Yeah, but they would have cleaned it. If it's still gonna be like oh
Look, if Christine can get a piece of shit off her dashboard they, can get some brains out of this kind of Yeah. Mm. I've heard that noise before from you. But enough of that Bill, I think it's time for you to take us out of word of the strange and you can get back to whatever party it is you're at please, 'cause um you're b sort of just spilled vodka all over the carpet. It's
flossing teeth and thongs. Right Bill, get us out of the world. Next week though, gimme iron. Hairless pets. Weird.
This one will drive you absolutely mad.
The riots began because the stories could not meet the demand of Senator Kaine's novel In the Mouth of Madness. Kaine disappeared two two months ago without a trace. I'm the guy that writes horror books. You can forget about Stephen Kaine. Kaine outsells them all. I need to know if he's alive or dead and I need that book. It's a set-up, isn't it? I just have to work on how it's set up. Kaine's writing has been known to have an effect on his readers.
You see this? It's a map. This whole thing is being stayed. You just get out. This is not reality. It's all happening for real Trent.
My mother's book will drive people crazy. Let's hope so. The movie comes out next month.
In the mouth of madness from nineteen ninety four rated eighteen around thirty five minutes. Little bit quicker than Christine. An insurance investigator begins discovering that the impact a horror writer's books have on his fans is more than
inspirational. Should more than just inspirational should be there, but more than inspirational. Um yeah, uh this is basically J_C_ with the help of K_ and B_ does H_P_ Lovecraft. Yeah, with inspiration by S_K_. Uh yeah, we've got effects. Uh K_ and B_ before it was formed was ki oh I suppose no, probably was actually by this point. Yeah yeah, yeah, uh do the effects first Fantastic. effects. Uh we
got a random uh rich I'd love the fact that Chilton Heston was in John Compton movie, even if it's just a very small uh bit Um. the the piece de resistance, the icing on the cake for me in this film is Sam Nill and his performance Um. Sam Nill as an actor um I love it when he gets into roles. That's why I love him and uh uh Jeff Goldblum in in Jurassic Park. They make Jurassic Park, those two, do you know what I mean, as well as everything else obviously. Um
Samuel's credible he's such a good actor and and this is I for me I love this this premise uh uh uh it's uh a mystery um I I love the fact that the idea is like okay you you basically be set it out at the beginning what happens and you take down people who have put false claims in insurance to make money you're gonna go after 'em you're like a detective it's not you're not a cop you're not a detective of of uh murderers or people cheating on lovers or something like that but you're an
get insurance investigator type thing. It's quite a nice thing um I quite like it and Samuel's like super good at it. He's like crazy good, got the skills hasn't, he He's. born to do this role. And it's just basically about uh uh this person's gone missing, we need the we need the their book, we need to put it out, can you go find this person for us. It's kind of that and I just like the simplicity of that and we go to another town and it's cut off from everything
else it really is 'cause obviously it changes when they get there. And it kind of almost like a Stephen King I suppose the s the town is that mm and and but I just love the fact it gets weird and creepy of like the the lady with her husband this old man naked handcuffed to a leg and just t things going on and oozy things and creeping things and pulsating doors of slime on and I'm a massive fan not,
I hadn't seen it for years uh to come back to this and watch it r as a review, and sometimes we do actually go to review films for this show, ladies and gentlemen, and we do sometimes, and non-gender people obviously, and we do sometimes t come back to it and review it and be like actually, this wasn't as good as i I remember it, but i it does happen We. all have it Um. lot to say with this. It came back pretty good still.
it's got um before we talk about the Stephen King stuff um it's also got David Warner in it who we're big fans of um John Glover who I absolutely love and everything he's in um is in it as the Doctor Sabstein um you would know him from Gremlins to Smallville and a bunch of other stuff uh and uh we've got have you got the Carpathian in it as well as a guy running a bar with a mutating
you know, uh and the old lady from um uh I think she was in The Wedding Singer maybe, y she plays the old lady who's got her naked husband handcuffed up. That was it, a happy girl. I knew it was an Adam Sandler film. Um yeah, I uh I think it was one of those probably just one day just got this movie 'cause you'd be down in a video rental store because you didn't know what was good or what wasn't, you
had to go buy the boxes ladies, gentlemen, non-determined people before the internet. Um that's how we did it. I'm not sure a lot of you remember And. um I reckon it was just to pick up from the video shop one day and then just be like what is going on here and just like what the fuck and just, you know, just going weird and weird abo yeah, I really like this film.
Yeah I, this is the second time I've ever seen it, much like Christine Piyu. Yeah, um and I watched it. Yeah. So the first time I watched it, uh I thought it was alright. I couldn't remember much about it. It wasn't long ago, it was probably only about ten or so years ago was the first time I ever saw it, you know, when when the internet was at its, you know, peak and we were able to just get anything we wanted to watch. And that was the John Carpenter film I hadn't seen, so I watched it.
probably ten fifteen years ago for the first time and that's the only time I've ever seen it. So I went back to it I went back to it thinking yeah I'll go into this and my God I I got a lot out of it this time around. Obviously I'm a big Stephen King fan so this is a love letter to Stephen King you, know again we've talked about this with Christine him and Carpenter were friends um so i there's a character and there's the main character Sutter Cain
is obviously Stephen King. He's a horror writer. His work is he he produces these mammoth books that sell billions around the world. They get turned into movies. People love these movies, they love these books. But it's a bit of a spin on it. And again, it's got a bit of a link to other Stephen King work. Although this has nothing to do with Stephen King behind the scenes, it's it's a love letter to it. But you could link this to Misery, you know, with a writer going missing. Um it's t it this could be
written by Stephen King um, you know, uh and it's very meta, which again is incredibly ahead of its time. This is five years before s mm no, f three years before screen Two. three years before screen. Um John Carpenter is even in it. You know, you see his name on the poster of the m the movie um Hobson's and and it's it's just going back to it with the reviewer's eye. I really ap didn't appreciate this the first time.
I've been podcasting for ten years, I've watched a lot of movies since the first time I saw this. I have an appreciation for John Carpenter and meta and horror and just film making now. And my yeah, I really was ri not I wouldn't say I was blown away, but it's a fucking incredible film um and very unnerving and nothing I hadn't seen before, but at the same time a very unique and clever story. And if it was made now, I'd be like meh, they're just doing that
'cause of Stephen King, but back then they were doing all this because just because. And it's got H_B_ Lovecraft elements to it as well, which is fucking great, do you know?
design stuff like. It's quite interesting 'cause you don't actually watch any of this and really uh t put John Carpenters b uh f thumb print or anything or anything really. Do you not have a finger print so to speak. D do you know what I mean? The d the s the shots and things. It wasn't any sort of real classic John Carpenter stuff. It tells a stor tells a story very well. But do you know what I mean? Mm-hmm. I mean I got a few John Carpentery bits Some. of it reminded me a bit of prints of darkness um and
some uh some of it reminded me of children uh Village of the Damned with the kids and some of it reminded me of the thing with the creatures and the sort of morphing of the creatures and stuff. So I did get a little elements but, yeah certainly, this isn't as John Carpenter fingerprinting as some of his other work.
Oh, interesting.
he he did camera and electrical department on big with trouble and no china. Here's Sin talk for a first escape from L_A_.
I think what John Carpenter does well, much like Stephen King, is he's able to make you feel like this little world that you're in, and it's always a little world, is real. Whether you're stuck at a church with Donald su uh Donald Pleasance or or whether you're on a little isolated base in the middle of Antarctica or or whether you're in a futuristic New York or here you're going off which is you and this girl and you t to Hobbes end of a of a village that doesn't
exist, it's in a book and yet you're in it. He makes it feel like it's this little isolated bit of weird nightmare. And it is like a nightmare this film. It's it's yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The the cyclist was creepy, the face of the cyclist reminded me of the um you wanna see something really scary. Um. But don't don't you just love the fact that the the the k the old person going along and it's basically the kid just trying to get
of the town. Sort of been over and over and it's just got old.
Never gonna get out. I also find such a cane played by Jurgen Prochnau uh really creepy. Um.
Uh but yeah, you're right, Sam Neill is what sells this because he plays fucking lunatic in this, doesn't he You? know, he's he's brought in in the beginning in a straight jacket and we know that's where he's ended he's gonna end up.
So we're watching this guy descend into this crazy and then at the end you realise and the other thing the the other reason this reminds me of Prince of Darkness is because all while this is going on, they keep talking about the things that are happening out there and it feels like it's the end of the world and this is his third in the apocalypse. Yeah, so this is there is something evil going on out there, you know. This could be a sequel to the Prince of Darkness, you know, it it could fit in nicely with that.
Um yeah, it's just there's a lot to love in this and a lot of great effects, lot of great scary moments, a lot of great unnerving moments, good writing, good performances, good direction. Doesn't feel very John Carpentry but then it shouldn't feel like he's imposing himself too much, you know what, at the same time. Just let the story flow. Let the actors do what they're thing and I had a blast with it, I really enjoyed it. I'm really happy you did Well.
We're out for a veggie.
let's get stuck in. We start off with some heavy guitar rock, Gav.
Yeah some there's some more rifts in there, so sort.
Really good. And much like the start of Christine uh with the car assembly line we're watching some books being printed on a big publishing. There is a bit of a link between these two randomly, isn't there? Because this is the key. Yeah, it's weird Um. and they're printing the new book by Sutterkain called The Hobbs' End Horror.
And then we cut to the asylum.
we've only just begun Oh. no. Not the carpenters. Yeah. Oh the the the it's very lovely dark humanist i it really good, yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. By the way I, do love the fact that we've got the main vampire from Friday night two is the styles. Isn't that so cool? I was just like I said Sarah was like it's f f f fact fact five. Oh yeah, and that was that. So it's quite nice actually 'cause I was I don't mind her as the head vampire from Friday night two. I think she does pretty good. Yeah. Yeah.
have some eye candy Not. that that's what it's all about everybody, but you know. Um so yeah, ju John John Glover uh plays the doctor and Sam Neill was brought in in a straitjacket and he's kind of acted up a bit. He fights back a little bit, he hits one of the guys in the balls and they end up putting him in a padded cell and then you you're right, that music's not explaining to the speakers. And he's shouting I'm not insane, I'm
insane. And everyone starts singing along in the whole asylum i i and that's when he sh it's not the carpenters. Uh and then there's a knock on the glass door. Um someone yeah but, he was in his cell behind him. So even in his padded cell he's not safe. What could it be Who? could it be? And then um somebody says it's not the ending You. haven't
read it yet, and it's you get sort of these weird nightmare flashes in his mind. And he wakes up and his sound is that the old switcheroo, the old American werewolf, you think you're awake but you're not. So he's actually awake now, it's all fine, it's all good. And this happens a couple of times in there. It's quite good. Um David Warner arrives. Ah David Warner, we love him. Um and he uh he says uh w we think he's one of them.
They say to him before he goes in the cell, now what is one of them, what could it be? Well we find out that there's something apocalyptic happening outside where people are being infected or they're just becoming evil or violent. We you hear all these snippets on radios and T_V_ shows throughout of this global virus, whether it's r uh religious or whether it's you know um some kind of disease that's
taking over the world making, everybody vi almost like you know a zombie virus. And they wonder if Sam Neill is one of these these infected. It's all very uh mysterious. And he's um when he gets in there David Warner, he's Sam Neill's requested one thing, a black crayon. Yeah. Yeah. I love the way that looks by the way. I've always loved that. And he's and uh how do you get him on uh how uh how do you get him on his strike jacket and
of stuff there I dunno.
In a straight jacket.
Yeah, i is he in a straight jacket at that point? Or no his, hands are free to draw or like, okay. Yeah.
Yeah yeah, it's cool yeah, yeah.
cross on him and stuff like that. And David Warner says to him look, I actually suspect that you're not insane and that you wanna stay in here to be safe from what's going on out there um and putting crosses all over your face and everywhere is a really good way of telling everyone you're insane, but I don't think you are. Uh and you feel safer in here, don't you? Is that what it is? Um and they discuss um whether or not he's got paranoid schizophrenia
which he claims he has um exp and then this is where he begins to explain the story to him and therefore us um he gives his story and he says it all started with the disappearance of such a cane and then we flashback and this is the whole movie is a flashback really no? I think we get a couple of little jumps back to the present day, but yeah interesting, storytelling.
The main story itself is what I loved the bit. It's the the the mental science of it's okay, but I p yeah I, love it when we actually get to him doing his thing 'cause I think Sam Neill's such a great leading actor.
What was it? Oh, foot part three. Yeah yeah, it is staying here. That was my first insu that was my first introduction to the Sam Neill.
'Cause he he's a very suave guy in a suit and I think he could have that that movie should have been really good. Um. It is yeah, the first omen. Just take an old horror movie, put the word first at the beginning of it and there you go, let's remake it, let's kind of reboot it, remake it.
Yeah. Like what? I dunno. Let's get on with this. We'll talk about it another time. So he is you're right, uh you mentioned earlier an insurance investigator. That's what he does and uh we see him at work the first time we see him in this flashback and he's grilling this guy. Yeah, he's like he's break he should have been a cop or or something, but you know, this is wh and we know this character from uh other John's Carpenter films as well.
Peter Jason. Yeah, not David Jason. Peter Jason. Um and he basically says to this guy like, I think you burned down the warehouse, your own warehouse for the insurance. He's like why would I have done that You're? talking nonsense. And he says well, some of the items you claimed that were in the warehouse and he has a photo of the guy's wife and says here's your wife wearing them the other day. And he's like uh no no no. It can't be right. And then he says alright,
here's your lover wearing some of the other items as well. And he starts getting all flustered and he says to him um we we spoke to your wife and she gave us all the information about you that you two were in it together and he says here's a piece of advice for you. If you wanna um team up with your wife to go into business, then don't fuck your secretary or something like that. I eas uh. Yeah. Yeah.
He's got it. He's he's won it. And um we see the first of many uh adverts for such a Cain's new book. One of them is on a bus. And Sam and his colleague, he's his colleague congratulates him, you know he, says I don't know how you do it. It's like you've got a six cents Yeah. he, says it's like you've got a six cents for this shit, man. You you just sniff it out. Yeah. It's just so like you're so good at this. They're both just sitting in a coffee shop as a window next to a behind number of a street just going ahead.
I'll let you tell this bit 'cause it's
And they're just sitting there chatting away and we just hear a bit of screaming in the distance and we do cut to it, but there's this guy with crazy eyes coming out with an axe just walking over the road. Now, when they shot this, those are not a lot of those are not extras. They're people just they're going the fuck just watching it, which I didn't realise, which is crazy. Yeah. Um and then um w just walks across a road and just looks up at them and they d uh what are
of um I think says to Sam Nill the other guy says something about uh or Sam Nill says something which is literally like the time um perfect for him to uh um t uh uh attack 'Cause. this guy has this hyper focus fixed on Sam Nill. He's just walking over the road without like i the car's coming wherever they have to just stop and he's just walking across the road and he's just looking at and he stares at them both from outside. They've not noticed him yet. It's so good when you watch this for the first
I I'm sure you enjoyed this. And all of a sudden just puts up an axe and smashes through. Just as Samuel says something about Sutter Caine smashes through the window.
And I was w I was watching the actors Sam Neill and um the other guy um uh Bernie Casey and they were they knew that this window smash was about to happen. So for them to just act so well and so calmly have this little conversation knowing that yeah. Oh yeah no no no, that's about to happen 'cause you don't know where it's going It's. like a jack-in-the-box.
blinking, I'd be like cut down, cut, you were blinking too much. Yeah but the window's gonna smash. Yeah but you've gotta b you gotta act, just I'd be a rubbish actor. I think I think to be honest the, acting would be fairly easy with a window smashing in like that, aren't you. But yeah he, smashes through the window and he says to them do, you read Sutter Cane? And so we're already great metal soundtrack going on while he's doing it as well. Yeah. Yeah. He loves metal. Um he's got very weird
And he raises the axe again, but the police turn 'em and shoot him dead, as you would, you know, with a crazed axe mount. Shoot 'em dead, please. Um we get a news report, yes. Uh there's news report a, T_V_ report, so there's fights breaking out and like like book shops everywhere where people been trying to procure up for Cycaine. And we see this sort of stuff nowadays, we apple with a new I_ phone and people were having fights, which is just perfect. Yeah, it's ridiculous, but um. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. Of course, of course.
Uh yes, uh there's news report a T_V_ report, so there's fights breaking out and like like book shops everywhere where people been trying to p procure up for Cycaine. And we see this sort of stuff nowadays, we apple with a new I_ phone and people were having fights, which is just perfect.
Yeah, it's ridiculous. But um
the news reports are saying is he some kind of mad prophet of doom? There's riots from people trying to get his book. Sh shops are running out of stock, country-wide, it's not just in one city, it's all over the U_S_ you, know. Well, I'm saying he's it you sort of go mad some of them if you read the book we're gonna discover that as well.
People. say they g they g p uh there's mild symptoms of uh from anxiety right up to schizophrenia or memory loss if you read his books. Fuck me, I'm not reading any of his books if that's what happens. I went nuts. He was People. would love to sort of. I love the sorry again, Charlton Heston is in a John Carpenter film. This is just brilliant.
the pedigree cost on this. Um John Hessen's in the um uh the o his office, he's a publisher and uh Sam Nils obviously uh John Trent the character is he's probably n as known as the like the guy they've probably used before and it's like get get John Trent here now, get Trent here now. Um and he's sitting in there and he's chatting away to him explaining about Sutter Caine. I mean have you read Sutter Caine? He's like oh it's that sort of trash pulpy uh horror right now, that's not really my sort of stuff.
He says well essentially he has written his new book and we've got deadlines, marketing, everything's happening, we don't have the manuscript, um we need it, we can't find him, he's gone missing.
He. vanished two months ago. When he when he slates when he says oh I'm not really into that trash, he says well this guy is out selling Stephen King. That's how big he is. He's pretty cool, he says that Now. at this point gov, I'd just like to say at this point this movie, they could have used him before. It could be the same publishing house that James Carnes works for in Misery. And maybe he went off and helped find you do you know what I mean? It c so there's like a little link there for me in to Misery here Um. or even you could say that this
went in a different direction and they were like la he was last see last known driving through some snowy roads, you know, it you know. It was just yeah. So um the mission is set. Uh we've got an investigator who is gonna go and investigate uh this book. Uh
here Um. she she is um uh uh b like um kind of like she n what is she going? But why is it he needs to send hers to validate something? Oh, she'd worked with him for yeah. And needs to go with okay, it kinda makes sense isn't, it?
And also they've said that they two weeks ago they received some pages from the new book which he's writing called In the mouth of madness. So they they know he's alive. And they reveal that the axeman that attacked them was Suttercain's agent. Um. Yeah.
That's what he that's what he says 'cause he ev that that that just gets sprung up. But uh yeah, so she's the uh editor, so she's gonna go along for a f reason, maybe just to prove stuff. But then it explain like um um it just sort of says oh oh 'cause Sam Neill says w what about his publisher? Um no, his manager, my co oh his agent. Why can't you why can't you just get hold of his agent to go for to do this? Why are you asking me? And uh it he's like well, you met his agent, didn't you? What do you mean I met him
the other day when he smashed me and he goes, that lunatic, 'cause like y I don't think Charlton Heston understands that th this guy was f actsin at me. Like you're telling me that's now the agent of the guy who's gone missing. And I love this mystery. For me this is like a conspiracy mystery for everything going on. Like oh, this is good. And what's great is right from now Sam Neal doesn't believe any of this. He says this is a publicity stunt to sell the new book. I'll go along with it, but uh no, I don't th I
believe any of this um and this is where they discuss what the books do to people, memory loss. Well I don't know. But uh they b they have no idea where this guy is. And they uh uh f uh f when he does find out though, it's like what are you Sherlock Holmes? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah. So they basically what
want him to go off and find such a king.
Well they said that he he he he was going a bit crazy and he started to think that his fiction was coming real. I love they've just throw that line in there and you're like what is gonna happen?
What do you mean it's coming real? I don't understand. And we get there's first of many shots now of the alleyway. Yeah. So th and just before that she does say to him why don't you uh read some of his stuff before before you no he goes to the book shop, doesn't he?
That's right, he goes for a shot and goes for a shot no, um. Okay, she says why don't you read some stuff and then we see like you say first so many times it's alleyway um where we just look down at it and there's a cop just beating up a homeless person. And oh okay. Oh okay. And he says you want some too buddy. And he just kind of looks and just keeps on going 'cause like oh for fuck's sake God, there's nothing about this Goes. to bookstore and starts just picking up I just started counting 'cause it b it's what you do, especially if you're in a
to go yeah, first thing you can do you go okay I'll start to understand what I'm dealing with here and I suppose I should read some of the stuff and he picks up some of the books and this kid just comes up to him stares at him and he says he sees you and he says w uh s 'scuse me and I okay he sees you and I write uh okay then just buy some books and go home and just sits there at home drinking some wine, reading a book.
yep. Um he's reading through his um work and he gets a phone call from uh I think from Stiles at this point which he's e he oh sorry. And he he says to r I gotta be honest with you, some of this is actually quite good, uh quite quite like this, but he's now read some of the the work of Sutter Kane. So he's now starting Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So he's now got Sutter Kane's
influences in his brain like everybody else in the world.
It's like it's uh a worm's going into the brain and starting to root. He he he he he basically now has a dream and he dreams he's back at that alley again, but this time the cop's got a really weird face.
Like a mutant face.
It's all fucks up.
And he wakes up again and he's holding the book and he's like Jesus fucking Christ. And then he looks to his side and the cop's on the sofa and so he wakes up again and goes oh my God and this isn't American wealth in London.
Yeah because the one of the ju little dreams he has is the a load of people with axes turn up and just start chopping the cob up. And he's like what is go it's like a triple um red herring, isn't it? He just kinda wakes up again and again and again and then he's like Jesus Christ I'd I dunno what's going on here. Um and he's got he's got ink all over a really c lovely moment. He's got ink all over his fingers and he rubs his eyes a little bit as well and it's just like he's got the mark of sort of cane on him, do you know what I mean? And the
same and that's what's gonna happen to him later when he puts the crayon on him. I love that, that he's got the black ink on his fingers and his eyes. And then this is where Sherlock Holmes in. Fucking hell. He gets all the books. And he cuts he realises there's something on all the covers of the books. He cuts them all out. And then he realises it's a map. Yes I, would
say so. It's a map and he takes this to Charlton Heston who's like what are you being? And he and he says he says it this is a map of New England pointing to this one section Hobbes' end. And they're like well Hobbes' end isn't real, it's a book it's in the book. And he's like well this is this is from our internet how did he go s go uh shape. I think uh I think I've I've re
I've basically memorised every shape and all the states around there. I think I know that shape where it's gonna fit How. how do you know that? It's very very incredible. Yes. Wow. Okay. Well it's, a place it it goes It's. a place called Hobbs End. It's not on the maps How. have you found this then How? have you done this?
why he's so good at his job. But he's being drawn to it though. It's almost like the with the Christine, isn't it? Yeah. It's it's it it's already got in there 'cause he's read some of the books. It's it's got in there now. So this is really yeah. Lit Cylinder's like, well great, road trip it trip it is then, and they go and they're on a little road trip. Now he plays a little prank on her while she's asleep. Yeah. I like the fact though, um even though she does try and give him a little kit I did, there's no at any
uh uh any chemistry whatsoever. It is professionalism. I do like the fact Sam, Neil, we're at no point anything whatsoever and there's no like little just look or anything whatsoever, do you know what I mean? I do like that. It's straight right down the narrow down the line. We're both doing our job I. like that. Mm-hmm. It probably would've been not that much. Just like in um Halloween three.
Just around the same time Oh. Tom and his tash.
exactly. So I'm glad it's not like that Um. yeah. He's driving down the road Stol Miss. Stiles is asleep. And uh well I'm just gonna look in this paper map. It's completely in the way. Can't see a thing. Oh. Put that down. What's she doing? I'm bored driving now and what's she doing? I don't know where I'm going by the way which we don't have a we don't have G_ G_P_S_. We're just fucking driving. What's she doing? She's asleep. Right well, I'm gonna wake her up. Just just
for the hell of it. Well luckily I drive around and in my glove box there's not a gun I've, just got a little bike horn. Hang on. Then he quidd he puts it back again. It's uh she goes oh you're awake and I was uh it's 'cause he he does it. It's such a cheeky little innocent joke. And I said to Sarah I've, gotta get one of them for my car. Yeah but uh well we don't ever do it to the driver, but but yeah she
um she's not very happy about that. And he says look, I think we're lost. And we see all the cornfields and this is like this is really in Stephen King territory now. I don't know. I don't know It's. a funny little moment that I really appreciate. I know I. liked it. So they're just driving around New England trying to find this place which isn't on the map Wow. W Wow. Okay. Um.
driving for a long time, it's now night time, they're still driving.
She explains to him why people like reading scary books or watching scary movies, so there's a bit of a nice little meta already here. Um and that's quite cool. Yeah, she's she's she's she drives now. She doesn't if I was her I'd be straight away to him as soon as he's fallen asleep. You're not fucking sleeping mate, you did it to me. Whoo. Oh. Yep, middle middle of the night.
Yeah, where it looks kind of a bit odd since she's okay and it look the c the c the cyclist, the kid s looks and carries on going and the bike has a card and the spoke's going. Yep. So she carries on driving.
And. then it repeats, she sees the kid again. So it's a cyclist again. But this time it's got an old man's face. It's kind of like mother old mother time in Don Darko. Um and this time she hits the bike. Yeah. And she's like oh my God. Uh so um uh Sam Neill wakes up and says what the fuck what happened to her He'll. just hit something and says oh my God. So they both do the right v correct thing. Both get out the car, go back and go okay right m emergency
services, da-da-da-da-da-da, let's have a look. Alright, just don't move, don't move, and the o the old person's just laying there, and they s what do they say? They say something really creepy. Yeah, it's a bit creepy. But you know, oh, I'll tell you what's, creepy. Do you know what's, creepy? 'Cause we're looking at an old person saying that, and what's the voice? It's a young boy. Or like a teenager. And it's uh there's it's the they won't let me out. It's like that voice. It's
whoa that's really creepy. Well wha wha wha don't don't talk don't talk don't talk uh yeah, turns to Samuel like that and then looks back and the person's just got up on a bike and just cycles off.
And he says right well um we b the kid's okay so let's just keep going I guess you, know they're, actually going to go. Yeah uh uh uh uh okay b let's keep on going then. We report it at the first time we get to.
So they switch back. They switch back now, so he's driving. And as he's driving now, it's still night-time, starts seeing weird flashes in the sky. Is it lightning? Is it weird lights? What is it? Can't understand it. And then all of a sudden it turns to the inside of a bridge tunnel, and all of a sudden it's fucking daylight when they come out the other end. And he's like what? We just and it's like they've gone through a portal into another world,
Into a a fake world within a book perhaps. She wakes up, oh you found it. Oh this is this is a dark humour again I. love it, it's just s slams the break, he goes whoa, and he goes look something goes oh I must have slept all night long, there's oh stars look, you found it, and they're just a a sign. She's like what what it goes oh yeah good, you are. It's just nice little humour isn't, it. Yeah. 'Cause it's complete accident and uh the time
they're in is completely empty, there's no one around that they can see, apart from a three-legged dog being chased by some weird children.
Yeah, it's a bet uh but uh Sam doesn't see this.
Yeah, she sees this and this is a this is something that you'll see quite regularly throughout the film but um they go they arrive at the Pickman hotel and she says she says this this was in one of his books and he's like what do you mean? She's like this hotel is exactly is it wh he's written it and he's like well he's probably just based it on where he grew up he, grew up here didn't, he? She's like no you you don't understand this is it's just too weird it's too exact. And they enter the hotel
office. Yeah, but that that th yeah, if that was there and he grew up there and he's saying that he would exactly describe that as it is because you don't need to make it up because it's actually there. So uh she is still like he could still be like well yeah, I understand where he's coming from. Part of her is quite excited though 'cause she's a big fan as well or,
Yeah.
Yeah and she sort of just when they walk in the hotel he says she says to him that floorboard there are creeks there's, a picture behind us of this there's, this over there and then she says oh the woman that owns his hotel sliced her yeah, and he says oh no I, read that one too. Yeah yeah, 'Cause. he says she's a lovely old lady she's, not gonna be axing up her husband.
She's like I think they say turned him into coleslaw. Yeah. So uh they ring the bell and this old lady comes out uh she said she said oh can I help you so she would like to have a room and says do you know Sutterkain's s she's like Sutterkain? I don't know what you're talking about. He says you don't know Sutterkain, like the novelist who's from here and stuff's like no no, don't know anything. It's like right okay, which is a bit weird um. What well I've,
course while Sam Neill was having this conversation with her she uh Stoles looks round and just looks to her side and and the picture that she'd been looking at the i the face looks like it's moving. So she's a bit like what the fuck. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Well she's like well actually there should be like a big
temple, the black church, uh just outside the window. He hopes up the window and says, look, nothing, I feel it, she goes, it's the wrong window, it looks at the other side and it's there. Um that that basically is a rational author d uh orthodox church, I was about to say orthopedic, orthodox church, uh out in the middle of nowhere, and it's actually there, that's an actual thing. Mm-hmm. The black church. The black church.
church. Go call it the black church. It's cool, the black church is a great name. They c they call it the black church. Yeah yeah yeah, that's what I'm saying, yeah. Yeah. I guess they definitely call a movie called the black church. So I got a movie I was look at the of that uh looking at earlier all these films I got watched next to my telly and it's called the black windmill. It's not ho it's not horror, I don't think. Mm-hmm.
on the way to the church they uh Linda sees the three-legged dog again being chased by these children. Um and they get to the church but it's locked. So they can't get in. However, several, like half a dozen doberman creep around from the side of the church and look at look at them. Oh you have you s mentioned all the the grands turning up. That that happens now. Will the dogs come out first? And
dopamine don't come out yet, the dopamine sent out after the vans will turn up. They all turn up uh and we get old um uh Wilhelm von Hamburg from uh Ghostbusters 2, the painting guy who s gets out 'cause his kid has been kidnapped by Sutter Kane. So they get out of Kane and his door opens up. And the door opens up, his kid's standing there and the door goes back and forth as opening shut and all of a sudden Sutter Kane's just standing there smiling.
really good visual, because that door opens and shuts and opens and shuts.
Well I just thought they couldn't have the control.
Dunno. Okay. Maybe he's driving around in a t stolen car in Russia, word of the strange.
Maybe. Um and then all of a sudden the door's just slammed shut and then a load of Doberman, which are quite scary dogs, come round the corner and attack all the people Sam, Neil was probably like, the fuck is going on here, this town is empty, now this happening.
Yeah, all of a sudden these vans full of rednecks have turned up, and there's eight doberman attacking them and ripping them to pieces. Um do you know that quite a lot of these actors and stuntmen actually had to go to hospital after this scene 'cause the dogs actually took chunks out of some of them. They 'cause they're 'cause they're 'cause there's so many of them. Um if you've got one or two dogs, that's fine, but with that many, their pack mentality kicks in and they forgot that the dogs obviously forgot that they were acting. I mean it's a dog, it's not gonna remember that it's acting.
know what I mean? They get trained in a certain way. So they actually went in on these guys and started ripping them to p bits. Oof. John Carpenters just there with the spliff. Oh wow, this is gonna look great on film.
Mm-hmm.
Yes. That is the appropriate behaviour, I think, after seeing that.
He says to her, this is all a set-up. This is again this is just promotion for the book. You're trying to drum up some press. You're getting me involved in this now. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Well, she admits to him now, okay, partly you're correct. Um he did vanish. We sent him away to drum up a little bit of publicity, but he actually vanished. So all of this is real now. And this whole Hobson thing, I can't explain anything that's going on in in the last two days. So y you're right, we did send him away to start drumming up some publicity, but he did actually vanish. Then we started receiving weird manuscripts from him. And that's why we've hired you 'cause you're the best. And he's so he's kind of
half right, so again he's proven himself that he's c he can sniff out a lie very well.
He's like no I'm, off. So she starts kissing him to just try and use that old decoy of uh getting away like, p here's sex. You know you, can have sex. You don't need to go anywhere. It's just a he's like no, yeah.
Yeah, he actually says n, no, but even the even your sex won't keep me here young lady, and he runs off um.
And the painting is changed again as, he runs past the reco hotel reception. Well he doesn't run completely past, does he? 'Cause uh uh the lady's standing there, doesn't she?
Yeah.
Um uh and he says um putting out a painting and he says something to her and she goes, hell no. It's so weird.
He says in the book, it's described that uh y the owner of this hotel painted that. Was that you? And she says hell no, I didn't paint that. And then she sort of kicks something underneath the desk. Can you hear it? It's just the way she says hell no though, it's really like a different person. Hell no, yeah it's just really odd and I like that, little touches. And then to kick something and he goes to look over the counter and she goes uh is there anything else? And he goes nope, and just
goes, running out the door and we well we pan down to a naked man handcuffed to her. Well, just just before that before, we can do anything Linda, is ran past him and got in the car and she's gone off on her own. Well he's sorry, well he's talking to the receptionist and he's tries to look over the counter, see this is what I mean, every p fingernist pushes his story along. He looks round and looks behind him and starts his runs past him, what the fuck's going on now? So he has to go after her, cut to the lady, he's got her
naked oh, an old guy proper naked laying there handcuffed to a leg on the floor. It's so creepy. It's so creepy.
So he's been abandoned in this little village. The only thing he can do is go to a bar, Gav.
And if you're gonna go drinking in a bar, you wanna go to Vega the Carpathians bar, don't you? So Vega's there serving drinks.
There you go. Have another one of my special drinks, yeah? I'd love to could.
He says he's really got you all all these and uh the guy says to him no no you, don't understand Something. in the church is leaking out and it first of all it infected the children, and then it started infecting the adults. And he's like yeah yeah yeah, they're still really great, I really get what you're doing here, but I'm not buying any of it. So the guy's trying to tell him that there's something leaking out, whether it's evil or whether it's a virus or a disease. Um.
This this changes it for him though to though it's a bit more reality checker doesn't, it?
Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa The. guy shoots himself.
Oh okay, sorry.
It's Mummy's day. Uh the effects on the little girl 'cause it's K_M_B_, you can see obviously they did Walking Dead and stuff. It looks so good. It looks really good. Yeah. Yeah. I'd like to I'd love the fact that K_M_B_ did all the effects in this movie 'cause they're so good.
she goes into the church to get away from these kids and she finds like this weird door um and there's slime all over the walls and then she can hear then she can hear and Jack Nicholson's working on his oh no, that's a different um book uh film um she finds such a cane on his typewriter. Uh there's a little weird jump scare here where an arm comes out of nowhere and grabs her and then vanishes just to sort of
out to the weird nightmare. And such a cane says, nice to see you Linda. And he's got like a slight accent which makes it a little bit like more spooky. Do you know what I mean? Nice to see you Linda. Oh. And it turns out that um they were telling the truth. Um he says it turns out they were telling the truth about what I write. It can get into people's minds. And he starts revealing you know that he's giving this message to the world that he's he's
Well, for he says for years I thought I was making all this up uh but now it's he's all been told to be from there many sort of uh gestures over to this bulging door like in the haunting but, it's a slimy bulging door with things behind it so, we know there's like creatures behind it trying to break out. It's smelly slimy bulging door.
He says to come see, the instrument of the homecoming. This is the new bible.
Yeah. She gets all these crazy horror images flashing through her head.
Yeah. It's very odd. There's no reason for it, but it doesn't matter There's. no reason for it.
'Cause I'm not a massive body horror fan, but I think the mystery element of the weird town has always g uh appealed to me.
Yeah, I love that. That's why I love a lot of Stephen King stuff 'cause,
Uh back at the hotel though, Sam finds Linda very weak. She kind of bursts in and and says I'm losing it, I'm losing it. I saw the new book. Don't look at it, whatever you do so um Sam Sam Neill, whatever you do don't look at it. She's she calls him Sam Neill for some reason. Go make Jurassic Park with Steven Spielberg. Um Sam sees some weird paintings depicting the creatures that you know that that are in
these books, and then he hears the old lady f downstairs screaming, or at least he thinks it's the old lady, but it's actually the uh the man. And th it's very quick, that painting, when he looks closer at the painting, there's this this slimy sort of monster just off the out of the water just in it, and it's like what the hell is that, and that's where he hears about it, it's so good. Oh god, yeah yeah, it this is actually or the whole thing is like a nightmare.
this bit freak me out the most this next bit now because when they hear the scream they assume it's the old lady um and when they get there they realise that she's turned into this tentacled monster that's basically attacking her husband. And it she's like she's still got that cute little old lady grandma face, but she's got these d horrible tentacle things coming out of her and she's like it's so good. Oh Jesus. I know um by the way this movie's so hard to get a hold of I'd love to have this
my collection but, it's really expensive, like really expensive. Yeah, we we rented it on Prime. Yeah, we we rented it on Prime.
Yeah, I'd wa I want an actual physical copy though, but it's really hard to get hold of. There's no blu there's only German Blu-ray for about twenty five quid. Yeah.
Well, he's obviously freaked out by these tentacle creatures. He runs off um and Linda starts to mutate and growl and she chases after him. He runs outside and he drives off now in the car.
And then he sees Linda again and all the children are dancing around her. Yeah, in that b she s she says in in the original book that Greenhouse is full of um he see yeah, and the kids are dancing around Linda and she sort of stood there um and he's he screams fuck yeah. Oh.
He's going back to vegan. And um he says to the bar man I know I know how you're doing all of this. It's really he says it's good special effects and you're using hidden speakers and it's really clever, but this is not real. And the bar man just looks at him and he's got a really melty looking face at this point. And Vega the Carpathian blows his own brains out with his shotgun. And I think this is the point where it's just like oh
But just before he blows his brains out, he does say I can't help it. He wrote me this way, which is a really chilling line. He wrote me this way. And then he blows his brains out. So he then punches Linda Knocks. alright, puts her in the car. Um she she swallows the car keys. Uh they were made of uh chocolate, I think.
Oh pa weird.
Yeah, it don't no problem.
Seems to get on the bike again.
Yeah, the weird kid on the bike. And then the ultimate effect in this movie
Ooh.
contortionist. With a with a backwards mask on. So she crab walks but her head's the right way up 'cause of the mask and it's Linda obviously. It looks really really good. And she says Kane has a job for you. The effects are just phenomenal here. Yeah, absolutely.
Uh this happens over and over now, where he tries to leave the town and all of a sudden just turns right back in front the crowd, slams on the brake, he's about to run 'em over, reverses, turn around, drives out of town, approaches and he's back pops back in town every time.
He can't get away, like the kid couldn't earlier on in the bicycle.
I didn't like this next bit where he um crashes the car and he wakes up and he's in confession he's just in the confession booth in the church. I don't really know how he got there.
Again it's a nightmare so you don't need an explanation I suppose. Yep. Yep. He says in they have a little chat and he says uh books aren't real. King says y uh by now you should know that I'm bigger than the Bible Um. He says well I can tell you something, your books suck. Um well he says well you must me read my new one.
It will drive you quite mad.
And he says basically you're here, I wrote you here, you're just a messenger to take the book back to the world for me and to live in my book That's. why you're here, that's your job.
He fills um Samuel's head with horrific images and s tells him it's all about belief and when he's finished he says I'm all done and he finishes typing. I'm all done.
And what the agent was actually doing was trying to stop him, the agent knew. So the actual the agent was actually doing a good thing, was trying to stop Sam Neill to bring the book in. So actually the agent wasn't doing a bad thing killing Sam Neill, just trying to kill Sam Neill. And it made him start going crazy like oh we can't do this. He uh figured out what was going on also, however, managed to do that and that's what he was doing now is his actions of the acts trying to kill Sam Neill.
And now Sam Neill starts really questioning his own sanity. He starts screaming, no, I'm real, you didn't write me. I'm I'm a real person. I came here on my own. I I know. And then he starts thinking, am I? Am I? And uh Cain says to him, why don't you go home via this strange secret slimy passageway that's like a wormhole back to the real world and deliver the messi and deliver the message. And at this point the door is like bursting open, the big slimy door behind him is bursting
And Sam Neill thinks, well, I guess it's either wait and see what comes out of that door or head down this slimy passageway. We've all been in that situation in life. Um such a came starts ripping his own face like paper. The great effect again really quite simple, but looks great. Um and it's just a giant page uh that then rips into the unknown, like a a tear in space time reality. There's so much H_P_
craft witness in this, this last part. It's great. Um Linda um is reading as uh as that you know, she's reading out as as he does the actions. She's like he looks into the passageway. He's stepped first foot into the passageway and he's doing the things that she's saying here. Um and he goes down the passageway alone. A big giant weird monster chases him. And suddenly he's back on the road in its daylight. And the boy on the bike
passed. And he says, you okay? And that's darth vader, that is. That's Hayden Christensen. He says, you okay mister? And he's like oh my God, it's like I'm back in the real world. He gets a f f fuck this. Yeah, he gets in a t gets in a truck, um goes back to a motel room, a packi path uh package arrives for him at the hotel room. Yeah, he just keeps coming back.
back to him. Yeah. Yeah. And he's really paranoid at this point. And then m yeah, it it didn't fit with the rest of the film. It's up. It's up.
Or some producer said, oh just, you know, put a sort of put a drum beat put a hip-hop drum beat here Wh. why?
If if that had played over the end credits with John Carpenter rapping about the mouth of madness, then that would have been pretty decent. But that sadly didn't happen.
Such a cane appears on the Greyhound bus next to him, and he has another couple of wake-up, honestly wake-up, honestly. He says, I'm God now.
Uh th th he says to him uh um you like the colour blue when, you wake up have, a look around you.
I don't get that bit I. didn't catch that.
When he wakes up he, looks around him the, whole bus is blue. It's like ah ah
And when he wakes up, he looks around him, the whole bus is blue. He's like ah ah
the way where he saw the mutated cop beating the kids There's. no cop there this time. Um. Yeah.
It's this is the best bit. Uh he goes back to Charlton Heston's office and says look, fucking I couldn't do it and all sort of stuff. And he says and Charlton Heston's going so y you you say this s this styles lady that I th I sent with you I d s I don't remember any of this Like. do you want that? We've never had anybody by that name working for this cop. Uh and I think do you think the book's affected you at all And? it's yeah.
When he when he says there's no such person as Linda, that's Sam the Assessment, that's because she was written out of the book. He just sort of has a little answer for Charlton Heston furthering Charlton Heston to think that this guy's deluded to.
to say like you know th this book we can't publish this book, it's g it's gotta stop, it's terrible, it's gonna kill people when they read it uh and he says what are you talking about You? delivered this book to us last spring. It's been on the shelf and the movie comes out next month. And he's like what? What? And then Sam Neill is now the X_ man at the bookstore.
cut back to our story in the asylum. And I was just like whoa That's. a lot. A hour and a half is maybe, it's f fucking hell you, know.
Yeah, it's that and Warner uh uh David Warner leaves after he sort of tells Rich's story.
There's the news are saying there's an epidemic of violence, schiz paranoid schizophrenia globally. Um people are p people's eyes are bleeding. Um yes, so someone's buying the book and Sam grabs an ax and chops up this young man who's buying the book. And that's how he gets put in the padded cell.
And David Warner says um I'm gonna leave now. Thanks for telling me this weird flashback story of you uh ending with you chopping up a kid. And Sam says well, you'd be safer in here than you would be outside with what's going on out there.
David Warner steps outside and he says to the doctor, David Glover, he says um sorry John Glover, not Danny Glover, John Glover. He says uh well, he thinks that the Sutter cane books are causing the epidemic outside. So I think he's clearly insane. And then uh Sam just s Sam Neill hears horrible monstrous growls and screams coming from the door of his cell. The door gets broken in a little bit He. exits the cell.
In in the morning he leaves his cell. It's day and time.
Uh on the news reports there's mu people mutating and there's mass killings everywhere and it's like a virus.
Yeah, which must have yeah, which must have sent everyone insane.
That that that was the that was the finishing effect. The book started then when the movie came out that everyone else watched that and it made everyone go inside and start killing everyone.
It's a bit like the ring curse, isn't it? But
But we're going apocalyptic there. Everyone's li you know done that and the towns are empty.
And just laughs.
And it he's literally watching the film that we've just seen, 'cause they're showing the clips of it on the screen for him.
I bet it was. Yeah, he does this amazing crazy laugh and we end with some heavy riffing rock.
And that is in the mouth of madness my friends. It ends very much like Prince of Darkness. The world has fucked up. We can't do much about it. See ya.
Yeah, really really like that. And that is now probably floating around in my top five carpenter films 'cause I've just watched it. This is what happens.
Good. Well you have to watch it again, not reviewing it Uh. at least within the next year or two years.
Mm-hmm.
what else he's written but really clever ahead of its time with its meta stuff. I think the icing on the cake really with that meta stuff is that um John Carpenter directing in The Mate of Madness just re just was brilliant I think. Um but yeah incredible turn from Sam Neill. And it's not a John Carpenter film that people talk about very much. They talk about the the sort of top five you know the main ones. But um there's
one I think it's I think it's forgotten.
I think this is one people who if you've never seen it, you're in for a treat, and if you haven't seen it for a long time, or you've overlooked it, just go back and check it out. 'Cause I think it's very nightmarish. Big thumbs up from me Big. such a keen slimy thumbs up. Yeah. Um alright well let's uh let's get out of here and come back for the outro Um. I hope everybody enjoyed the
views of the John Carpenter film.
And we're back again.
Thanks for joining us, everyone.
That was episode a hundred and fifty two. Fantastic to talk John Carpenter again. Well it's a patron pick for the next episode p p p patron pick. Uh it is Jamie's turn. Hi Jamie, and for she is selected now you don't know this, I'm gonna reveal these to you now. Uh for episode a hundred and fifty three, our next episode she selected two zombie films. I've been down a
be yelling for a while. Uh I'm sure you've seen at least one of them. Um they're they're singles. No no no Uh. the first one is twenty ten. The dead. Yeah, well I don't know if it's South Africa, but it's definitely in Africa. Uh uh in English c uh it's two English guys uh uh did it and in uh Africa Great. brilliant. Um I saw the premiere of this uh Friday
and I know you used to own it on D_V_D_ and I must have learnt to some one 'cause uh I don't have it anymore.
I remember being impressed with it because of the the what went into making it as well. 'Cause it was they just went out and did it.
There's a really good behind the scenes because those guys got fucked up from um uh they got like a gun point yeah gun point as well, loads of shit going on trying to get their stuff taken from the the camera rigs and shit. There's a second one but I've not seen it. But yeah fantastic, I can't wait to talk about that film, that was a great movie.
From 2013.
Amy, I'm very surprised and and pleasantly surprised I've. never seen the second one. So that's uh new for me. Have you seen either of these? Oh okay, yeah I've not seen a second. Okay cool,
I can't remember I. don't think I was as good as the first one from what I remember but, I remember enjoying them both and again it's it's what goes into making them. And again it's fun to talk some zombies. Um so yeah we'll get into those two zombie movies and why Jamie has picked them for us um and that'd be good fun. And then after that it'll be episode one hundred and fifty four and it'll my birthday episode.
So it's like your patron isn't, it? What are you uh what I I I'd now I do know you've told me before, but tell me again.
Oh yeah.
I gutted it just came off prime, it was on prime it's, gone off.
Cool stuff.
Okay, yeah.
Okay. Uh so so the next two episodes are kind of fairly n not uh you know not movies I've seen lots. So one of them uh two of them I've not seen. So that's great.
Who are we doing?
Uh who who you know he is. Yes, because we'll be covering Trollhunter from twenty ten and the autopsy of Jane Doe from twenty sixteen. Yeah, so it's gonna be a lot of fun 'cause there were two very diff films on the web. They're both very different films Wh. Trollhunter is a lot of fun big, action comedy and th the autopsy of Jane Doe terrifies
me for some reason. Really creepy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it's a really creepy.
It's a good atmospheric film. And sadly one of the actors in it passed away at a very young age. Yeah, yeah, some detail. Um so we'll we'll talk about that. Uh so the next three episodes are gonna be zombies um, Dolph Lundgren and and Nor and Norwegian horror. Uh that's gonna be great.
Wow.
Jesus Christ.
We'll be already being shown as we speak.

N fuck you, know, he looks about forty four, Jesus Christ.
But I'd looked at him last. What were you for now?
A flick knife taking people's lunch boxes. He must have thought what I'm doing is why am I why have you asked me? I don't even look young. I look actually older than I actually am and I'm too old for this bar.
It's a good night from um um Kurt Russell. Why not?
I don't know what that means, but he would laugh, I'm sure.
Oh it is, and it's a good night from a manical Sam Neill laughing away. Uh do do everybody make sure you're safe and look under the bed for Sam Neill.
Oh. Yeah.
Hell no.
